Ha! What an awful display of hubris, but I'll get to that later. So you run around crashing into other humans at full speed? Big deal, I was doing that in little league and we didn't have leading with helmet rules, and QBs whining and looking for a flag every time they got hit. Your league is a joke, along with the rest of our "modern gladiators".
Our armies fight not face to face like men, but with snipers, IED's, and drone attacks. The Olympics Games? Men used to gather to wrestle, have foot races, and command wild beast in chariot races. The winners were immortalized in poems, while the losers made sacrifices to the gods and begged for forgiveness. Now? We have girls doing gymnastics and men doing choreographed dances while diving gracefully into pools. And how are these already soft winners "immortalized"? By Bob Costas through a NBC broadcast:smh:....It pains me to say that we will be the laughing stock of our descendants.

Agreed. You may never be a true gladiator in Rome, but you can learn what it was like in the days when they walked the Earth.

When you've been captured as slave, you don't sit around singing negro spirituals waiting for the underground railroad to come your way. You grab a weapon, and after rigorous training and discipline you kill any and all who stand in your way to freedom. Start an entire revolution along the way if you have to.

Pay attention to the painting, timeless information that could one day save your life.

Gets lost in the shuffle of his other movies, but this is still Stanley Kubrick in his prime along with Kirk Douglas. Are you not entertained?

Cool thing they probably didn't teach you in school:

They say life on Earth started about 4 billion years ago. Now lets pretend that the end times comes through either the enlargement of our sun or from Andromeda(our neighboring galaxy which is on a collision course with the Milky Way). Both of these events are expected to happen about 4 billion years from now. This of course means that not only will there be no men watching the end times, whatever we will have evolved into might be as advanced from us as we are from microorganisms. Not just humans of course, this goes for all life on Earth. Take for instance the ape, a relatively smart animal. More than likely they will evolve to something smarter than modern humans. If so, will they have any sense of history? Will they know for instance that their evolutionary ancestors were kept in cages and experimented on by us? And if so...will they demand reparations from our descendants? Strange unimaginable times are surely ahead.

i.e. End times or no end times, evolution means men are operating on a very short time line and before long our entire species will be just a footnote in the history "books" of our descendants. We will be known for two things, the advent of Science and of Religion. And it's the latter along with death, that our next film focuses on.

We're violent, stupid, superstitious, vulnerable, afraid of the dark, and afraid of death. Seventh Seal cuts through human nature at its core like no other movie. After fighting and seeing plenty of men killed in the Holy Wars, a knight named Antonius Block returns home with a crisis of faith when he runs into....

He challenges it to a game of chess with his life up for stake. After realizing it's futile to try and win, he plans to prolong the game while he tries to find some meaning and purpose to life.

Antonius decides to travel through the country with the short time that he has left and it turns out to be a madhouse. Women are being raped in abandoned villages, witches are burned at the stake, and The Black Death is sweeping through the country in full force. All while his atheist squire seems hellbent on making Antonius turn and face his worst fears.

Antonius stumbles through half destroyed churches trying to find God who may or may not be there, all the while being accompanied by Death who most certainly is.

"Religion is part of the human make-up. It's also part of our cultural and intellectual history. It was our first attempt at philosphy, our first attempt at morality, our first attempt at health care. But because it was our first, it was our worst."

Agreed. Educate yourself on the basic relation between men and religion, or be a fool.

The next selection is a modern one and you deserve a slap if you haven't seen it.

If I hadn't seen that huge poster for "The Seventh Seal" (great movie, btw), I would've sworn you were going here...

dude i remember watching clueless and the scene with the gay guy watching spartacus cause he said heston was hot.

now every time i see that movie i think of it as a gay movie.

Houston is it a gay movie? can a str8 guy enjoy the movie the same way a gay guy can but not in a gay way?

Now folks, we all remember the 2000's and they weren't the prettiest of times. Governments dragged citizens into pointless wars on terror, watched indifferently as cities were destroyed by hurricanes, a new era of shootings emerged, financial crisis, global warming, and unbearable gas prices, I don't know about you guys but I longed for the days where the only scandal was who did or didn't give Bill Clinton a blow job.


Now sure there was a lot of exaggeration, but it certainly seemed like the world was heading towards the apocalypse. If that does happen, all men need to know what it will look like, and how to survive. Luckily there was one movie that captured all this unrest and made a pretty and I mean pretty package out of it....




No peaking dell.

Admittedly the 2000's were lightweight compared to some other decades but the great thing about Children of Men is that it took inspiration from all of them. The thing about some of the horrors of the past is that we view them from a distance. Imagine though, Martin Scorsese going back in time with an HD hand camera and filming the Holocaust, the Civil Rights movement, and The Great Depression up close and personal. Really...everyone from a kid starving in the street during The Depression, to a black kid entering the first integrated school will have something to relate to in this. A lot of it isn't in your face though, you have to pick up on the subtle and quick clues in the background. The more you know about history, the more you'll love this. Children of Men becomes a real apocalyptic movie because it's not dealing with zombies and virus outbreaks, it deals with things that actually brings countries down to their knees. And it isn't shot in America where you always have that sense that everything is gonna be alright. It has foreign buildings, streets, cars, government, and people so an unstable environment seems much more natural. One could easily write a college essay on the film's story.

Anyone who's seen it though can tell you that the true beauty of it is in the camera. It's like reading 1984 or playing Bioshock for the first time. The main characters are simple and boring, it's the world they live in that's interesting. Children of Men uses the camera not just to film the story, but to display without words all the other happenings in the world. To really appreciate the film you have to ignore our hero and instead pay attention to everything around him. At times it's more of a documentary than anything else.

However when our hero does get thrown into the fire, you're smoothly with him every second. This isn't some Bourne Identity shit where the action scenes are really jarring and confusing.

Go to the room that has your 50 inch plasma and the Blu-ray player. Pop this in and prepare to be

Children of Men is a modern classic and in my personal top 10. It's absolutely an essential watch for anybody who likes movies. Not optional.
