Just wondering what franchises , or movie to game titles absolutely baffled you as to how they can screw it up.

Example...I was playing Homefront and 15 mins in ((i.e half way through)) it hit me that theres never been a good Terminator game. Same premise but with more awesome weapons and a shit fuck ton of machines.

What other franchises keep screwing it up ?

WWF Old School games-- Classic wrestlers but the games always have screwed gameplay and controls. KoKo B Ware body slamming Andre the Giant FTL.


Street Fighter - Im sure many or most will disagree. I just cant stand any SF game after Champion Edition. I played SF4 for 2 days gave up after realizing there was no story and the worst boss in history.I gave Marvel Capcom about 12 minutes before becoming nauseated. Everything is stupid button mashing and COMBO! COMBO BREAK! 5098230947594785 HIT COMBO!!
Absolutely terribly watered down. It would be like an MK game with 7 fatalities per round.

btw Madden is not acceptable as they technically stopped trying to make a real game in the early 2000s.

NHL series. Make an awesome franchise mode with AI GM's that don't know how to use it.

MLB series. Make an online league mode, don't let anyone make leagues.

Dragon Age 2. Sell out to EA and allow them to rush it. Turn a potential GOTY into a rushed unpolished disjointed whore of a story.

Tiger Woods 2012. Create career mode that includes DLC, so you're punished if you don't buy it.

Funny you mention Terminator as I just saw T2 this past weekend and was discussing with friend how big of a wasted opportunity it was not capitalizing on that franchise with a great game. Did they ever make a Matrix video game? Thats another movie franchise I think could have been translated to a great video game.

Definitely agree on the wrestling games although I would include newer wrestling games as well. SvR is taking steps forward but no wrestling game has really captured my interest very long since WCW/NWO revenge or Wrestlemania 2000.

Spider-man 2 did some great things and was a nice base for future games and they just never built on it. In fact they got significantly worse. Really though, I can't think of a solid superhero game with the exception of Batman AA.

I just chalk up all Superhero games to the superhero movies before Xmen.

They all seem to follow the same hack and slash "combo" striking elements. Plus Hulk and Wolverine dying during a mission is just retarded.

Could not disagree more with Super Street Fighter IV and MvC3. I don't think either are a "button masher" and I think both are the best itterations of their respective genres, and SSFIV in particular might be the best fighting game I've ever played.

Some of my examples off of the top of my head:

I loved DA2, but they did make mistakes on it that are incomprehensible.

Chalk up Alpha Protocol in that camp too. I actually enjoyed that game but it was such a cool concept I don't know how they botched so many aspects of it.

Growing up I freaking loved Tales of Destiny and all the games in the Tales series have been total fluff since... Dissapointing for a fan of japanese style rpgs.

As far as movies... I know it's hard to make a game with ancient weapons thats attacks don't get incredibly repetitive, but I always thought that a game based on Gladiator or Brave Heart would be pretty bad ass game. Gladiator could have had the story mode but also a franchise-esque mode where you build up your guy and see if he could survive a couple weeks. ha

I played the Terminator 2 games for NES, SNES, and GameBoy as a kid, and I couldn't agree more that they dropped the ball on that one. RoboCop vs The Terminator might be the only worthwhile console game for both of those franchises.

From what I've played, the Alien and Predator series has been disappointing outside of the Alien vs Predator arcade game as well.

I liked Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage on SNES. That was a pretty good beat-em-up IMO. Probably one of the few LJN published games that I liked. However, the Spider-Man games up to that point were pretty much trash.

Batman and Batman: Return of the Joker were pretty good games on the NES also.

Sonic The Hedgehog; After 3, Sonic + Knuckles and Sonic 3 + Knuckles was all right but might be considered one of the first software-based DLC with the way they stretched out the amount of levels you could play and how there were obviously areas that another character should have been able to go through but not Sonic/Tails.

Anything after that was either a half-baked cash-in on the Sonic name or a bullshit attempt at 3D gaming that wasn't fully free roam. :smh:

Mortal Kombat; MK3 was great and so was Ultimate if only for the fact that they gave you so many dudes to play as (Annihilation or Armaggedon did this too but you can have only so many bells and whistles to cover up the fact that you've been selling the same game for a decade plus).

After some critiques came in about the new MK being not so great, I dunno if they should have just left this one dead and buried. :ghost:

Arcades in general; Money-for-tokens is bullshit. Money-for-credits was a winning combination if some of the profits were spent on getting newer and better machines.

Instead, fuckheads kept all the money and the only way to piss away all your change on cabinet glory is if someone actually bought a machine for personal use OR you have a new arcade spring up in your town.

...which sadly no one goes to due to poor advertisement and has its operation shut down in 3-6 months.

Batman as a game franchise; Arkham Asylum is the only game featuring Batman that isn't a complete waste of time.

DC Universe is Heroes Online with a paintjob and a shoddy level system; Batman Returns played like shit on any console; Batman and Robin was fun except for the "...and Robin" part; and the DC ripoff of Ultimate Marvel Alliance was crap.

Batman can beat everybody and everything the All Mighty Himself could throw at him BUT he can't have more than one decent game franchise? :facepalm:

Moreso MVC3. You dont think narrowing the face buttons to "weak medium hard" attack buttons and having characters jump in every 15 seconds button mashing ?
All fighting games have there nuances and learning curves but theres no way within 5 minutes of play I should be pulling off 15 hit combos with characters Ive never played before.

SF4 had alot of pointless characters. Visually it was the best since 2. The controls were smooth but the complete lack of SP was dissapointing.

The old MK/SF games could easily be fun and were very playable against the CPU. MK still is , SF is not. Perhaps if I played online my opinion would change ?

Ive always loved MK. My issue is and always will be is the atrocious control scheme. Everything is left right up down down up A for a friggin move. With the amount of characters in the game its ridiculous. The fact ANY move requires you to press UP in the middle of it is asking for frustration. Especially fatalities which gave you 2 micro seconds to press down up down up left A+B from exactly 13 feet away.

Please elaborate on the arcades.

IIRC in NYC arcades became extinct because of crime. Arcades were a haven for gangs and fights and stabbings. You had to have a license to have more than 3 machines. The places that did ..even in heavily policed times square were filled with thugs and hood rats.

Where have you seen this? I have heard nothing but praise about the new MK game. After playing the demo and watching videos, it looks great to me. Glad they took the game back to its roots.

It's a fair point on MvC3, but I think it's a VERY balanced game once you do get into its nuances. Say what you will about when you should be able to pull off the ridiculous combos, but there are so many balancers in that game that it really...well...balances out.

As far as SF4, I don't know about pointless characters. I think that that's one of the things they've finally begun to AVOID in comparison to old games. There will always be those worthless characters (I'm looking at you Ken) that are just kept around because of fandom, but I think overall there is an immense about of variety in the characters and play styles that come with them in SF4, and moreso in the more balanced SSF4 (because it wouldn't be a SF game without 1500 iterations of the same number).

And I would say that the CPU CAN be fun for SF, but no where NEAR as fun as the online. The online is borderline perfect for a fighting game. I've never had any lag whatsoever, and most of the people that I play aren't little 11 year olds that call me a faggot.

The best for SSF4 though is the couch head-to-head, which I benefit from because Philly is such an HUGE fighting game city, so I've been to multiple free events to play it against guys that are both good sports and great at the game. All of these factors have likely skewed my view of it.

All of that said, I have hated the MK games since 2, personally. Just not my cup of tea.

Wow, great call on Alpha Protocol. It was a great concept, was fun to start and it was even delayed, which added to the hype surrounding it, as many gaming mags had the hype machine running.

The Force Unleashed is my other game. Lucasarts had a great franchise going with Dark Forces/Jedi Knight, and instead of creating another game with Kyle Katern, they created a new character and did a very weird story behind it, the second game included. The second was an even bigger disappointment in my mind.
