This whole thing is stupid. None of this would even be an issue if Auburn was sitting at 6 wins right now. Why sit Cam for taking money when Georgia has players who are also being paid? Yeah I have no evidence of this but it's naive to believe otherwise. Does Newton getting paid make him any less of a student athlete? IMO no because I don't believe he was ever a student to begin with.

NCAA is a joke. If they truly wanted to stop things like this they'd target people like boosters, shady agents and the actual schools.

Fuck that noise, doesn't excuse a thing. Just because everybody else does it (and I seriously doubt it happens to the extent some would believe) does not mean the NCAA should let it slide when it has evidence of wrongdoing.

Auburn should sit Cam because if not, they'll risk going on probation for knowingly playing an ineligible player. Chances are, this isn't the first time they've heard of Newton's desires to get paid.

I'm a firm believer that the D1 football and basketball players should get paid the same as student workers, but shopping your commitment for 200 grand is inexcusable no matter how broken the system.

Whatever, main reason you're interested is because an ineligible Netwon basically takes away LSU's only loss of the season. Or at the very least if Cam has to sit it drastically increases LSU's shot at making the SEC CG.

Whole system is shady. Maybe it doesn't happen to the extent everyone believes but I guarantee all those SEC schools are doing dirt behind the scenes. My beef is NCAA penalizing Newton isn't going to improve the sport, it isn't going the change things. It doesn't get to the heart of the problem.

While I am not able to say that Newton is the only collegiate athlete to take money, there are very, very few who are basically selling themselves for hundreds of thousands of dollars to the highest bidder. I do not think that student athletes taking money is rare, but the price tag attached to Cam Newton is utterly ridiculous.

Yeah it's especially stupid when you realize that there are documented cases of people giving money to a third party, in order to get closer to a player. For instance, an agent giving a scrub player money in hopes that he can eventually form a relationship with scrub player's best friend who happens to be a future 1st rounder. What impresses me more than anything though, is that Cam's father has been around the block before as this was the second time his son had been recruited. So if all of the allegations are true I think it's says a lot about the recruiting process that he was bold enough to ask for $. Auburn for paying for a student athlete. The athlete, even if he himself did not receive the money, because someone representing him was involved in the breaking of the rules.

Maybe someone more well versed in the rules of the NCAA can tell me why Cam would be in trouble if his dad was the one trying to get money. I mean if Newton was over 18 and legally an adult how could he be held responsible for the actions of his father? Wouldn't the NCAA have to prove that Cam was complicit in the actions of his father to take action against Newton?

I have no idea, but what diffference would it make? Guilty or not, I would think he's bolting to the NFL next year. The only thing they can do to Newton is take away his eligibility. But Auburn loses scholarships, wins, championships, etc, whether Cam knew about it or not.
