Interesting Week 1 NCAA games

I know it's probably on the 3rd or 4th tier of games but i'm excited for Navy and Maryland. This game will be the barometer for Maryland's season. If they can beat a perennial tough team like Navy then they might show they have the defensive toughness to win some ACC games. If they lose then I see the only wins being FIU, Morgan State, and Virginia.

actually , Marylands got some balls scheduling Navy. Thats a team that can bite in the ass if you arent ready. Just ask Notre Dame

VT lost damn near everyone on defense, so Boise is catching them at the right time... I honestly hope Boise rapes VT in their own backyard...

The last time VT lost damn near everyone on defense ('06 or '07), Bud Foster led the D to number one in the nation in total defense. As long as Foster is the DC at Tech, we'll have a good defense.

Of course, the old adage "the best defense is a good offense" holds true for us this year too. Tech probably has the best backfield in the nation, four candidates at wide receiver that could start at nearly every school in D1, and a solid offensive line. So even if our defense is a little sluggish, our offense should be potent enough to match whatever Boise's putting on the scoreboard.

Then again Bryan Stinespring is the offensive coordinator...

Hopefully Ryan Williams and Darren Evans run all over tech. I'm a little worried with our chances against Boise State, it's a little intimidating. Tyrod better be on his A game.

Going to be a great game though!

Should be a good matchup between overachieving Utah and underachieving Pitt. I would guess that Wannstedt does something to cost his team the game.

Colorado at Colorado State

I enjoy watching this rivalry game every year. Colorado State has had their share of upsets. Colorado has really gone downhill.

UConn at Michigan

An odd scheduling job, but a home loss to a disciplined UConn team could be the death knell for Rich Rod.

Oregon State at TCU

Similar smashmouth schools do battle. Oregon State usually gets stronger as the year goes on, so I expect TCU to take this.

LSU at UNC

Two of my least-favorite programs, we'll see if UNC is finally living up to the hype it receives, or if its still a mediocre program.

Boise State at Virginia Tech

If this is similar to Boise's game against Oregon last year, it should be a great one.

Random Larry prediction sure to go wrong, but coincides with this post...

By the end of September, Oregon State will have played both TCU and Boise State.

Mike Riley is too good of a head coach to lose both of those games. He is very underrated as a collegiate head coach.

Oregon State is going to have a very strong team this year. Good running game and OL will protect highly touted Ryan Katz early on. The Rodgers brothers can win football games by themselves.

Their D isn't a strong point, but its solid all over.

I got Oregon State with the upset over TCU in week one...we'll see what happens. TCU loses a lot of big time talent...it is tough to really overcome some of that.

Navy's not a perennial 'powerhouse' or 'contender', per say... YES, THAT WAS THE 1920s... But they are a perennial 'tough team'. Note the difference in spelling and meaning.

Powerhouse/Contender = USC, UF, PSU, OSU, Bama, etc.

Tough Team = Oregon State, UNC (eh, kinda), WVU, Pitt, Ok. St, Mizzou

I think it started to go downhill when they gave up 50+ points to Arkansas a couple years ago, when McFadden, Jones, and Hillis all had like 75-yard TD runs. IIRC, this past season Les Miles got upset at his offensive coordinator for not using his timeouts correctly, so Miles took over the next game and proceeded to botch a game by letting the clock run out.

I'm a pro-Miles guy, I think he's done great at maintaining the talent level since Saban left. His win pct. is slightly better than Saban, so it's hard to say he should be fired, or even on the hot seat for that matter.

The Perrilloux situation handcuffed us for two years and really derailed the program. This year, we are hopefully back on track and most consider this a make-or-break year for both Jefferson and Miles. I'm willing to be patient with Les, I like him as a person (despite his public speaking woes) and I like him as a coach when he has good assistants in place. That was not the case in '08 with the defense, or '09 with Gary Crowton running the offense. We've added one of Urban Meyer's top assistants as a new "passing game coordinator" position who also serves as a QB/WR coach. Hopefully he knows what he is doing and just takes over the OC job outright. There's a ton of talent on the offensive side of the ball but it is all very young and under developed. Hard to predict whether or not they will all figure it out at the same time, coaches included.

The defense should be soft in the middle again and easy to run on but the secondary and linebackers are among the best in the country, so overall the D will be solid. Very bend but don't break scheme from Chavis, which I don't totally agree with but I do like the results.

That was one of my favorite college games of all-time. It was crazy. The SEC was REALLY tough that year, and there were a lot of great games.

I really liked Matt Flynn when he was at LSU, because he was probably the least-heralded QB they've had in recent years, but he was really good. They beat Miami 40-3 IIRC.

Yeah I was at that one too. There's a mystic energy in the Georgia Dome that turns LSU's backup QBs into superheroes. Matt Mauck in '01 vs Tennessee, Flynn in the '05 bowl game you speak of, and Perrilloux who won the MVP in the 07 SEC CG.

So basically, what I'm saying is, expect Jordan Jefferson to get hurt on September 3 and Jarrett Lee come in and tear it up. But that is not likely.
