I've got nothing against Harrison or his accomplishments. Harrison is great. I am not disputing that. That wasn't my point. Just that his rip on Matthews is bogus and, at least out of context, makes him seem butthurt over the Super Bowl.

Will be interesting to see that in context and how CMIII even got brought up. Can't see why he would make any comment toward CMIII unless it was regarding the SB. But the same goes for Cushing (even though what he said is true on that one).

Ultimately, I think Harrison is a great player but I think he's retarded with anger issues mentally. A lot of his comments remind me of when I lived in Minneapolis when I'd stumble upon an uneducated homer Viking fan who would just spew out what he feels or something he heard on the radio which turns out to be completely inaccurate statistically. He's a reporters dream. But he's not alone, plenty of players are the same way.

I’ll start by offering my apologies for some of the words that I said during the four days in May that Men’s Journal was invited to my house to discuss what the NFL has recently been portraying as their attempts at ‘player safety’ rules and regulations, and to cover my everyday workout routine.


I did make comments about my teammates when I was talking about the emotional Super Bowl loss, but the handful of words that were used and heavily publicized yesterday were pulled out of a long conversation and the context was lost. Obviously, I would never say that it was all Ben’s or Rashard’s fault that we lost the Super Bowl. That would be ridiculous. Both Ben and Rashard are great players and great teammates. Clearly the entire team bears responsibility for the loss, me included. It was a team effort and a team loss. My teammates know me well, and hopefully understand the things I said were not meant to accuse them of the loss. We all have discussed several things that went wrong in the Super Bowl since that day. What I do apologize for and take full responsibility for is for speaking in such a candid manner to someone outside the team.


I also need to make clear that the comment about Roger Goodell was not intended to be derogatory against gay people in any way. It was careless use of a slang word and I apologize to all who were offended by the remark. I am not a homophobic bigot, and I would never advocate intolerance of gay people.


As far as the photo that was shown on air yesterday, collecting guns is a hobby of mine, and I advocate the responsible use of firearms. I believe in the right to bear arms. I like to go to the shooting range. I like to hunt. I like to fish. I could just as easily have posed with my fishing poles but it obviously wouldn’t be an interesting picture for the magazine. I am not promoting gun violence by posing for that photo. There are also other photos in the magazine story that were not shown on air yesterday – including me with my sons, with my mom and as a kid.


Unfortunately, the above items and other comments have detracted from the original purpose of the story – a position I have been advocating for some time now. If player safety is the NFL’s main concern, as they say it is, they are not going about it in an effective manner. There’s nothing about extending the season or issuing exorbitant fines on defensive players that makes any shift toward the prevention of injury to players.


I believe that the league may have been feeling increasing pressure about injuries and concussions last year, and that they panicked and put rules in place that weren’t fully thought out. I’m not advocating more flags and fines, I’m just saying that the current rules are not completely fair, and I don’t believe in the way that the league is handling their position as overseer of the NFL and the well-being of its players.


As far as the character and reputation hits I may suffer as a result of my comments in the article, I’ll take those hits and more if it brings increased attention to the re-examination and installation of rules and regulations that would create a real impact on player safety.

Of course he's butthurt he lost the SB. He's also pissed that Matthews is getting so much hype right now, and rightly so. I don't think Harrison means to say Matthews sucks, just trying to shed light on why he thinks he's overrated. I agree. Matthews is overrated if anybody thinks he's the best OLB in the league. Hell I've seen people try to pass Matthews off as the best defensive player in the league, which has to be a joke, because he's just not there yet. I see Harrison's comments as him being a blowhard that makes everything bigger than it really is, but every one of his statements has some truth to it.

See this is how you communicate. Not that crazy, barking, slurring, unprofessional, calling out the commish/teammates/players, and being a total dick.

Sometimes these "intimidation speak" or "shit talking" players go to far. It's best to bite your tongue, and let your play do all the talking for you. I hope he learns.

I don't want to sound like I'm standing up for Harrison here but, the reaction of the fan sometimes is retarded. A well-worded position that still mostly supports his overall idea in the interview (outside of ripping or not ripping his own players) is still there, so it clearly isn't FULL PR action. If Harrison came out and issued a genuine apology that was like MOST human apologies in the world, he'd probably sound a little dumb and backtracking and all the normal shit that people without a camera in their face do. Yet we throw jibes at him because he used his PR team because it's a fucking necessity in a world where the same people that claim that they want you to "be real" nitpick every word that comes out of your mouth and try to interpret what you meant.

It's either too well worded to be real, or if it's real, he's an asshole because we read into every word. I don't understand why these guys would ever want to talk to the media at all, with the way that fans are.

That doesn't work. When you don't talk to the media, you become Barry Bonds, in that no media member likes you. So every media member is out to trash your name. Besides you can't go an entire career without speaking to the press. Nobody can bite their tongue for 10 years. The best bet is to always be light and playful, and always respect.

Agreed. Apologies have fallen off because everything has. Sports journalism (journalism in general?) is really no better than TMZ at this point, yet they pretend like they are. Athletes should know better, but lets face it, if anyone could potentially be dumber than the typical celebrity, it would be the typical athlete.

What is your point? The fans jump to the same conclusions regardless of proof or otherwise. I think that you missed the overall point of my post. The idea is that Harrison literally has nothing to win from talking to the media at this point. Worst case scenario by him NOT talking? They just continue to say he's a jerk. If he KEEPS talking he might say something else, cause more controversy, have to get a PR approved backtracking, and then get tarnished more. There is just no damn point to talking to the jackals in the media. Sports media is so fucking pointless. It's glorified pop culture shit. Entertaining, but that's it.
