Jay Gruden to be named as Redskins head coach

I've tried to be optimistic, but it's just not working.

First, I hope the media doesn't latch onto the Mike Brown story from the past weekend. Brown stated his desire to draft Colin Kaepernick, but was persuaded to draft Andy Dalton by none other than Jay Gruden. The reasoning? Dalton fit his offense better than Kaepernick did.

I also was not a fan of his play calling against the Chargers, and he was unable to adjust what his game plan was when the Chargers were shutting down what he wanted to do.

We've essentially gone nowhere in my mind. We did accomplish what I wanted to see in a coach, and that was someone who has not been a head coach at the NFL level. We also didn't pick a coach who is coming directly out of college as a head coach who doesn't have much NFL experience. In that respect, I do like Jay Gruden as a hire.

However, we are possibly looking at another QB controversy here, and also a guy who looked very much like Kyle Shanahan as an offensive coordinator in the playoffs. We've made yet another big "name" hire, instead of getting someone who was a better fit for the job. Bevell or Roman, two guys who are currently working with similar QBs in RGIII are who we should have targeted.

I have more reasons to not like this hire. We are expected to retain Haslett, Morris as well as Sean McVay, who may become the offensive coordinator. Despite that, Gruden still plans to call plays, which I hate from an experienced coach, much less a first year coach who has a lot of work to do. It rarely works out for coaches who try and do more, such as calling plays and having personnel power, so yet another reason for me to not like this hire.

Bottom line is the way it fell apart with Shanahan probably made it tough for them to get any serious consideration from the big named guys out there, and Dan Snyder's reputation goes farther back than that as far as not seeing eye to eye with his coaches. Jay like his brother is completely enamored by the QB position, and the Redskins aren't doing anything till RG3 is fixed. They have solid pieces on offense, could probably use another WR and patch up the OL. Defense needs a complete overhaul or somebody that can get them to play better, idk if Morris is that guy though.

They are keeping Haslett so far as I know. As far as big names go, I didn't want Jon Gruden or Cowher. My preferences were Roman or Bevell, would have settled for McDermott too. I wanted to stay away from that big name.

As for the areas you've pointed out, here is my perception.

For receiver, Garcon is a great #1 for us, and we have depth, but no true #2. That is definitely something that we need to address, and I'd prefer that to be a receiver with size.

The offensive line is actually pretty good for the most part. Polumbus at RT fell apart, so I hope we can find a RT in free agency, but I'm very happy with the offensive line. If RGIII can make better decisions to throw the ball away instead of holding it too long, we see the pass protection improve immensely.

Defense does need some work in the secondary for sure. We need a #1 corner, and Hall needs to go. Meriweather is a solid safety, but plays recklessly and I'd rather go for a safer option in the off-season. The other safety spot needs to be addressed as well. I really like our line. Orakpo may want too much money, Fletcher is gone, so we need to replace two linebackers.

Plenty of holes to fix, and it's not happening all in one off-season. One thing Shanahan and Allen did was draft pretty well, and we have some good depth, better than we've had under any other team in the Snyder era.

i am startting to think that this Gruden hook up along with Haslett staying, was "pre-determined".

if that is true, then there were plenty of things that went on behind closed doors.

but

and get rid of dead wood.

That is certainly what it looks like. It would be at least two years to effectively transition a front seven to run a new defense, and since the front seven really isn't a problem with the Redskins, it makes sense to keep it that way. I don't like keeping Haslett, but that all depends on Gruden and what he feels the players opinion is I guess.

I'm sure lots went on behind closed doors. Again, I think this is the standard Dan Snyder "big name" hire. Gruden was the hot name for Minnesota and Tennessee. Detroit saw the writing on the wall for that and are pursuing Whisenhunt instead. I am still not sold that this was the best hire on merit, and best to grow the team. At the very least, Gruden is a fresh face to help rebuild faith in the team.

Definitely agree with Thomas on the Bevell or Roman point. I think they both would've been great hires. Jay Gruden... definitely not sold on the hire especially with Haslett still there.

Sidenote: I think Hue Jackson should get head coaching opportunities again. Just keep the personnel decisions off his plate. At the very least an OC position. And what about Tom Cable? Guess nobody wants to fuck with Raiders retreads.
