Jerry Angelo out at GM of the Bears

After talking to NFL executives, Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times doubts that Ravens director of player personnel Eric DeCosta would leave Baltimore for the Bears GM vacancy.
NFL Network reported earlier in the day that DeCosta could be "enticed to bolt," specifically for Chicago. DeCosta's wife is from the Baltimore area, though, and he was handed an extension last offseason as Ozzie Newsome's eventual successor. Execs tell Jensen that Marc Ross of the Giants, Will Lewis of the Seahawks, Les Snead of Falcons are prime candidates to replace Jerry Angelo in the Bears' front office.

But it is Angelo's fault that the team disintegrated like they did when Cutler went down.

The Texans went 3-3 with their third string QB. The Bears lost 5 straight, including 4 straight to Denver, Oakland, Kansas City and Seattle. I don't see how you can give him much credit for the NFC Championship Appearance, unless you thinking that pulling the trigger on a trade for a 25 year old Pro Bowl QB is somehow GM of the Year material.

No, but he failed to have a capable backup behind Cutler and build the roster around him. Why was Yates successful? He had a pretty good line in front of him and had two great running backs. After losing Cutler, the Bears then lost Forte and had to rely on Marion Barber, who at this point should be a goal line back like Jerome Bettis was.

Yeah, those two injuries hurt, but in addition to his other failings along the line and developing a #1 receiver, Angelo didn't address depth either.

Carimi was drafted with known health issues. Angelo still chose him. Same with Chris Williams. He doesn't get a pass for players he drafted getting hurt when they had injury histories coming out of college in the exact areas that caused them to miss time. Carimi's knee and Williams' back weren't unknowns.

Angelo has been awful.

I think the last 4 or 5 1st rounders for the Bears played a total of 11 games for them this season. That's pathetic.

Tommie Harris was another guy they got a good value because he was injured. He ended up doing great on borrowed time.

Carimi was slated to go around the time he was drafted. The guy was most definitely not a reach.

And the only reason I would even try and defend the guy is because I really liked him..............being in Chicago. I'm gonna really miss him. I miss Brett and Brad Childress in Minny and Matt Millen in Detriot.

I think a big part of the Bears problems is that too much power is given to the glorified moron known as Dave Toub. Over the years, the Bears have made too many roster decisions based on "special teams" play, which is absurd and drastically reduces a team's depth. If you have to choose between two 3rd string LBers, and you go with the guy who is the better special teams player, then fine. But the Bears actually draft people based on "how they can help on special teams" and they make offensive roster decisions based on special teams play. Not only does this ruin your depth up and down the roster, it limits what you can do offensively.

I don't think its a coincidence that the Bears two big problems are lack of depth and terrible offensive players. The Bears choose their offensive linemen based on their "athleticism" and how they can contribute on special teams. How about getting big, fat offensive linemen who can pass block and protect Jay Cutler instead? For years the Bears would have RBs on the roster like Adrian Peterson and Garrett Wolfe who could play on special teams but were terrible ball-carriers. What happens when your main RB gets injured or needs a rest? It seems like every year half the Bears WR corps is filled with terrible WRs like Sam Hurd and Rashid Davis because they can play on special teams.

Here is a bright idea...how about signing guys who can play their actual position, and not special teams?

Another concerning aspect is how much power Lovie Smith has as this point. The presser yesterday said the new GM wiould have to understand Lovie's philosophy....WTF? Fuck that. Plus the Bears might hire a new OC before the new GM. That makes no sense to me.
