Thanks to a tremendously-impressive news dump in the late afternoon before a major American holiday weekend -- this guy was suspended and so was this guy and this guy also -- we might have expected finally to hear about the fate of Browns receiver Josh Gordon.

It wasm all the way back in May when it was reported that Gordon could be facing a year-long suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy, and since then, we've heard nothing from the NFL relating to an appeals hearing, much to the Browns' chagrin.

But according to PFT, the appeal for Gordon has been set for late July unless the league and the NFLPA can agree upon a reduced punishment beforehand.

Either way, Cleveland would like to know what's going on with its star receiver.

"There's certainly a level of frustration because we've known the news for so long," Browns coach Mike Pettine said last month. "It's just a holding pattern and I understand that the league has a process that they have to go through and there's other things that they're dealing with and we respect that. But at the same time it is difficult because it really will affect our preparation for the season ... We're prepared for all of the eventualities, but the waiting is difficult."

The waiting, it appears, will go on for a little while longer.

With a first year head coach, I am surprised there wasn't some way to expedite this process. As Pettine indicates, it does affect your planning and preparation for the year, because if Gordon is truly done for the year, he isn't included in anything right now. If he has a reduced suspension, you have to give him some reps.

Sounds like Gordon isn't taking responsibility for his actions, which put him in this situation. Can't feel sorry for the guy.

He needs to be cut to have ANY sort of chance to switch the path that he is on. What happens in the next year will ultimately decide if he can get his shit together or not.

100% zero chance Gordon ever gets Cut. he is signed for 2 more years (this year doesnt count on deal). He will get his shit together in a year or will never play NFL football again. I see the browns making a trade now for a WR. D. Bowe could be a possibility. Also Jets cutting or trading Hill. Some bigger size WR to fill role of Gordon. We are loaded with Speed and small wr's.

I'd agree with you more if this was his first suspension. The fact that the second positive nets a four game suspension, compared to what other people have gotten for far more serious issues is ridiculous.

However, for Gordon to be at this point means he failed four drug tests, so he did this whole thing to himself. Even if it was "second hand smoke," you would think he would care more about his career and the money he is flushing down the drain to even be around it at this point.
 
One year for pot is ridiculous. Beyond ridiculous. I get that it's a rule, but it's a stupid rule ... and this is coming from someone who doesn't enjoy pot.

The NFL's war on recreational drugs is as ridiculous as its war on PEDs.

As others have pointed out here, Josh Gordon should just beat women ... he'd still get paycheques ... which, of course, is insane and ridiculous.
 
Pot isn't the issue really. Its that he had already been hit for it 3 times and still couldn't follow the rules. He KNEW it was against the rules and couldn't stay away from it. It shows he isn't mature enough to be in the NFL.

During prohibition, a lot of kids didn't follow the rules. In retrospect, prohibition was wrong and stupid.

Doesn't matter. Its a rule he agreed to upon entering the NFL. Right wrong or indifferent ... If you can't follow the rules go elsewhere. Just because you don't agree with a rule doesn't mean you don't have to abide by it.

Lol pretty much. I'm not against pot at all. I think it should be legal... My stance is pretty much "its a rule you agreed to, follow it until it changes"

Yeah, I'm a huge advocate for pot and can only imagine how it helps with the stress of being a professional athelete but...he knew it could come to this. He gets WAY more wiggle room even than the average person whose company would likely can him for one infraction.

It's a shame that pot is still so demonized, but the reality is that he knew the risks.

He's not suspended. He's banned. Meaning this isn't a 1 season, it's a full 365 day calendar year ban. No contact with anyone inside the Browns organization for a full calendar year from the day it was announced. Meaning he will also be out for all of Training Camp next year and will be eligible to play again around 10 days from the start of the season. Last I heard he could appeal after the season to try to be allowed at Training Camp though.
