I like the idea of an eight team playoff. The six BCS conference winners plus the highest two ranked conference winners not included. If you can't win your conference, you don't deserve to win the national title.

As for Notre Dame, they can either join a conference or get fucked over. Their choice. Not like they matter anymore anyway though.

ND's schedule is comparable to that of a lot of BCS teams with at least seven BCS teams on the docket a year. With that in mind, there should be no need for them to join a conference to qualify since their schedule is no worse than a Big East slate. There's no reason why ND can't be given certain criteria to meet in order to qualify in any playoff scenario.

... what a terrible fucking playoff. Way to shit all over the season. I am a huge Buckeye fan... WE HAVE NO REASON TO BE INCLUDED IN ANY NATIONAL TITLE CHANCE. We didn't earn it, we don't deserve it, and having a shot at it completely lessens the fact that we have 2 regular season losses to lower ranked teams.

Take the top 6 conference champions/independents and give the top 2 teams a bye week. This year the matchups would be...

1. #1 Alabama

4. #4 TCU
5. #5 Boise State

2. #2 Texas

3. #3 Cincinnatti
6. #7 Oregon

Notre Dame according to most rankings had a tougher schedule that teams like Texas, Cincy, Boise State, Ohio State, and etc. All of those teams are in conferences.

To put it simply, your perception of ND's schedule is wrong. As JeremyHight posted, ND has a tougher schedule than some current BCS bowl-bound schools according to multiple sources. Is ND's schedule as difficult as it's traditionally been up to a few years ago? Not by any means, but that doesn't mean that they only play patsies as you say. If you're willing to give a team that goes undefeated in the WAC a bid, you certainly have to give ND some consideration if they have a comparable record.

I don't understand your statement about ND having to "grow a pair." What does ND gain by joining a conference in your view? Stronger schedule? better recruits? In general, I don't understand why ND has to join a conference. This seems to come up often with regards to ND, but I have seen no one provide reasoning behind the move other than the lame "ND gets special treatment" excuse. The only benefit that I can see is possibly more TV revenue than what they're currently receiving from NBC.

Since I'm assuming the final two spots would be determined by the polls, I think you underestimate the people who vote in said polls. Do you really believe that voters would rate ND very highly if they whooped 11 cupcakes and were blown out by USC? I doubt it.

The only way ND would sniff the top ten with your doomsday schedule scenario would be if they were undefeated, in which case they presumably beat a high caliber team and possibly another few bowl teams along the way. In any case, I don't see how this scenario would be very different than Boise State's this year TBH. I'd imagine you would give Boise a shot in your playoff, correct?

As long as ND continues to schedule as it does, they will continue to have a comparable schedule to at least any Big East team. As such, there should be specific criteria (outside of conference affiliation) for the Irish to meet in order to receive a bid.

... The BCS has them as #2. You can argue all you want, I believe the formula is flawed as well considering they force computers not to take into account Margin of Victory, but those are the current rankings.

ND should join a conference because the whole notion of a team getting it's own tv schedule is ridiculous to begin with (not rating wise I'm sure NBC makes money off it), and because a lot of conferences (Big 10, Big East) need to add another school.

The TV contract has become less of an issue with the advent of the Big Ten Network and the like. ND probably stands to make more money on TV revenue by joining a conference. IIRC, they took a hit after the last contract they signed with NBC through 2015.

The Big East needs another team to join their conference more than the Big Ten, and they would probably make the most sense due to ND's affiliation in other sports. However, by joining a conference (BE, in particular), ND severely limits their OOC schedule against traditional opponents (USC, Michigan, Navy, MSU/Purdue/?). ND's incentive is further reduced since they probably get a net loss by joining a conference as well.
