This is where I'm at, looking for suggestions from others who have recently done a build in case they know of good part that comes at a good costerformance ratio.


Trying to keep it as close to $1000 as possible.

That's got me to $960 pre tax/shipping, so pushing my limits already.

For the time being I got a standard Dell "21 WS from work that I can use with my old Aquos "37 720p TV. Will get a new TV end of year tho that should suit my needs and will be the main screen of use.

are u going to overclock the cpu? if not then dont bother with the K version. 660ti might be a nice upgrade.

Every think about going with a smaller case and an mini itx board? I kind of want to do that but not ready to at this moment in time.

IMO Switch to an AsRock Motherboard and throw in the AMD Bulldozer Black Edition Processor. With 8 cores, it is a dream. Especially if you do graphics/editing.

Yeah i intend on doing just that.

660ti is about 70 bucks more. It's possible but I don't know if I can fit it in.

I don't do much graphic/editing and I think 8 cores is overkill, can't imagine it would be fully taken advantage of. I'm getting a decent heatsink for the 3750K so I should be able to OC to 4.4-4.6Ghz if not push 5.

At that point, it'll be a beast. So I'm gonna stick on that front.

Might stick with the GB. Did some reading on the OC boards and there's a few page comparison of what I've got, and the Asrock Xtreme4.

Seems to boil down to slightly better quality for the GB which should be key if I want to OC the 3570K to 5GHz.

I cannot claim any experience with them at this point, but I don't hear tons of great things about the AMD Bulldozer line. I almost held off building my rig to see what they could do and I'm pretty glad I didn't. The newest ones seem solid but on the bench, they don't outperform the i5 3570K. In some areas, the FX-8350 does but the Ivy Bridge chip is a good step ahead on gaming. There is only about $20 difference between the two, as well.

Intel definitely gives the best performance per core. Unless you absolutely need to cut cost on your build, Intel is the way to go at the moment.

I built a bad ass gaming rig about 6 months ago. I kept my Sony Blu-ray burner, Samsung 1080p LED monitor and Logitech speakers from the previous setup. Here's what I put into the new rig-

Total Spend $1147

The video card was almost $300 on its own so you could build something using the onboard HD video card for somewhere around $850. The only thing I would have rather done on my build in hindsight is to have gone with a 256GB/512GB SSD and added more RAM.

amd fucking sucks. there is a reason you can get 8 cores for the price of 2.

i would totally get the k unless the cost differential is that great. i love knowing that in a few years i can oc this cpu and be up to 4.5. i dont come close to pushing all 4 cores now though.

i have that same SSD....its fantastic. You might save a few dollars by going with a 1TB or even a 500gb. I have a 1TB and in over a year i still have 471 gb left. with hundreds of shows and movies.

you will end up buying a aftermarket CPU fan, plus internal fans.

idk how it is in canada, but no tax ordering from newegg in US - see if you can get stuff on the free 2 day shoprunner...or see if you can get a 1 month trial of shoprunner for free to save some costs

i like that case, ill probably go with it.

the SSD is just for installs, the 1.5TB HDD is for storage. looking at getting two for redundancy.


I'd want to go with the 7950 Bill has, but that's 90 more than the 660. We'll see how I twist my own arm as I figure out and finalize this.

Not sure if going beyond 8GB really does much for you. I do think you shoulda went with faster RAM tho


Wish I could find the infamous Samsung GDDR5 1600MHz RAM somewhere, sold out everywhere. Easily OC it to 2600MHz without any concern for the part. But for that reason, hard to find.

the hyper plus 212 is another one i have...sweet fan and great price.

installing it is not very easy when doing it for the 1st time. newegg has a video instruction for it. i suggest watching it a few times.

I have the Hyper 212 as well. Solid unit for so little cost. Maynard is right - the install instructions suck balls. There is an installation video on the CM website that is solid, but I recall the one on Newegg being even better.
