I played some games on the PC but that was rare (Sim City mainly) and a few neighbors had SEGA's so I was able to play those as well.
I never had any of the Nintendo consoles. All my friends had the Nintendo when I was growing up, so I had the honor of playing the worst sports game of all time (the generic Nintendo "Baseball" game, where every outfielder is Alfonso Soriano). My college roommate had a Nintendo 64, but we only played the WWF game. I played Sim City and Half Life on the PC, but the PC games were such a pain to deal with.
Console ownership evolution:
Atari 2600 - (games were very limited. You could play 15 different games in 30 minutes)
Commodore 64 -(favorite gaming system)
Sega Genesis - (still somewhat limited, but graphics were pretty good. I think these last "cartridge" systems were vastly superior to the early "CD" systems, especially in terms of sports games)
Playstation 1 - (I thought this was a terrible system. Its strange how good Metal Gear and Gran Turismo were, and pretty much every other game was crap. In my frustration, I bought something called the "Sega Saturn", IIRC, and after I bought it they stopped making games)
Sega Saturn - (even worse than the PS1. Had no good games, and the sports games were a total joke)
Playstation 2 - (still my current system, although I don't really play games anymore. Very happy with this system. The sports games had franchise/dynasty features which made the highly replayable.)
