South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore will enter the NFL draft, according to a source close to the player. An official announcement is expected this week, possibly Wednesday.

Lattimore sustained an extensive injury to the anterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament in his right knee and has been vigorously rehabilitating. Lattimore believes that focusing entirely on rehabilitation with NFL team doctors will help him recover quickest, according to the source.

Lattimore understands he may have to sit out this season, but has a goal of jogging and catching passes at the end of March for NFL executives and plans to visit with them at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis.

Since the injury, Lattimore has spoken with other running backs who came back from knee injuries such as Willis McGahee, Frank Gore and Eddie George. Lattimore believes the time is right to enter the NFL draft, in part to have as long a professional career as possible.

Lattimores recovery is on schedule, according to the source, and he is not utilizing crutches. Lattimore also has the blessing of South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier.

In three seasons at South Carolina, Lattimore, 6-feet, 218 pounds, has been of the most dynamic running backs in college football. Lattimore has rushed for 2,677 yards with 38 touchdowns, including 662 yards and 11 touchdowns this season.

On Oct. 27, against Tennessee, Lattimore took a helmet to his right knee and was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Columbia, S.C. Since then, Lattimore has received an outpouring of support.

I don't know if this is a good or bad idea. If he was gonna have to sit out next season, or come in late next season this might be better for him money wise.
 
still should prob be mid 2nd, the way he looked this year coming off an injury was great, he's shown he can come back from an injury and be effective, hopefully for him teams still have faith he is super talented
 
I didn't think he was that special of a back this season, the original injury sapped his explosiveness. He's basically just a between the tackles guy at this point and with the injury history I'm not crazy about the risk. Pulling for him, of course, but he seemed like a shell of his former self even before the 2nd injury.
 
Don't people understand that major leg/knee injuries these days aren't a death sentence anymore? He'll just be another RB with a bionic knee. I have a feeling whoever gives the guy a chance is going to get a gem, whether that means he sits out the first year or not.

He's got great vision, Hes hard to bring down with arm tackles, and he's good at finishing his runs. But two major knee injuries like this?

I have to agree with Nasty, I'm not taking a chance on this kid early but if he falls and the need is great enough why not. I would have liked to see him prove he can withstand a full season in the NCAA. I think he could be a punishing back at the next level with legitimate elusiveness for a big guy but I don't know if his body can handle it.

Seems like he would be a perfect fit for a team needing a short-yardage solution, or in a zone-blocking scheme.

I'm saying their games are incredibly similar. Lattimore will probably be a 4.5-4.55 40 yard dash guy at best now. He'll get by on his vision and violent running style
 
He would be a great back for a team like the Packers who for most of the season have struggled running the ball in situations when they only need a few yards.
