Orioles give up pitchers Kam Mickolio and David Hernandez

In my opinion this is a steal for the Orioles as they are adding a huge power bat to their lineup without giving up guys like Matusz, Tillman, and Arrieta.

I guess the Orioles don't feel Josh Bell is ready to play in the majors.

Apparently the Diamondbacks are preparing to make a huge offer to Konerko, this looks like a bit of a precursor.

Reynolds is always at the top of the strikeout list, he's a bad third basemen in terms of errors...not sure what his range is (where's FedEx).

Pluses: He should be entering his prime (he'll turn 27 in August) and he can knock the cover off the ball.

If he can cut down on the K's...he could be a lot better.

DH for the orioles midway through the season I am betting. The guy's Defense is awful at 3rd base, they are trying to replace Huff. The bat may do it, but that K ratio is ridiculously high. Still a steal.

Actually, he's got decent range, just a stone glove a lot in the Rickie Weeks mold. He was almost tolerable as a defender last year too metric wise (2.5 UZR/150, first year he's ever been a positive).

Reynolds is a case where strikeouts are actually bad. In terms of Adam Dunn's high strikeout rate it's at least balanced with a very good walk rate. Reynolds on the other hand strikes out 200+ times and only gets on base at a .320-.340 clip which is terrible for a "slugger".

Reynolds couldn't get on base in the NL West. I can't imagine he's going to handle AL East pitching all that well.

Orioles got a big time power bat for nothing of worth to them. That is a good move.

He's not really that big of a power bat though, he's a career 108 OPS+ guy that strung together two consecutive seasons of 30+ HR while getting on base only 33% of the time. People get wowed by a 44 HR season, but honestly he's not really that good.

They didn't give up much to get him so it's not a bad deal, but I think people need to step back and look at the other aspects of Reynolds game.

Yes, but at what cost? His inability to get on base and his penchant for striking out while trying to get those 30 HR costs his teams runs.

Decent move, nothing groundbreaking and not going to get them over the hump obviously. At the least it will give them some more lineup depth and take the weight off their young hitters.

Yeah, don't get me wrong it's still a good deal for Baltimore, just don't think people should overrated Reynolds because of high HR numbers.

Reynolds stinks. His strikeouts negate his power, and no matter what his metric stats say, he simply can't catch the ball.

Still, good move by Baltimore. John Heyman reported that they have thrown big money at all sorts of free agents, but everyone keeps saying no. At least they are trying, and added somebody via trade.

Is Reynolds better then the Orioles other options at third base? Yes. But that doesn't mean much. I wouldn't count on him for much if I was an O's fan. He came cheap, and deservedly so. His K% has actually gone up every year since he made his major league debut in 2007. It went from 35.2% in '07 to 42.3% in '10. I wouldn't want anything to do with a guy who hasn't shown any sign of improving such terrible numbers.

I've been very critical of Reynolds in the past, but the Orioles haven't been able to get anyone else, and are doing what they can. It's like when the Royals went out and aquired Mark Grudzelanek & Reggie Sanders & Gil Meche & all of those guys a few years ago. At least they tried to upgrade, but it's hard to aquire players when you are down & out.
