Massive Chael Sonnen fail - FAILED DRUG TEST

According to a report today by Greg Savage of Sherdog.com, Chael Sonnen failed a drug test taken from his 8/8 fight with Anderson Silva in Oakland for the UFC middleweight title.

The report lists George Dodd, the new Executive Officer of the California State Athletic Commission, as the source, who mentioned it to Savage at last night's Shane Mosley vs. Sergio Mora boxing match and Sonnen was told on Friday about the positive test result.

The drugs of abuse testing (cocaine, marijuana, etc.) would have come back long ago, so this would indicate a performance enhancing drug test, which in California brings a one year suspension. This would eliminate the planned Silva vs. Sonnen rematch for early next year, which, with the exception of heavyweight title fights involving Brock Lesnar, looked to be the biggest business match the company had on the table.

A suspension at this point would be devastating to Sonnen's career, not only from a reputation standpoint, but ruining whatever momentum he had gained from his strong performance against Silva.

i would figure the winner of belfort-okami will still get the next shot . wanderlei is still recovering from his surgery, wont likely be back till next year.

edit - marquardt or bisping (if he beats akiyama) could also be possibilities since both would be ready to fight before belfort/okami

They've been targeting the Super Bowl show in February for Silva's return fight.

Belfort/Okami, if it were earlier, would be perfect. But they winner would force the Silva fight to be delayed at least another month.

The Bisping/Akiyama winner could get the shot.

Marquardt is the easy choice b/c he's healthy and just won, but nobody gives a shit about Nate the Grrrrrreat.

SI reports that the top CSAC official (exec. director George Dodd) said Sonnen told him directly, one day before UFC 117, that he was taking an illegal PED and he may fail a drug test.

Sonnen, 33, of West Linn, Ore., was apparently concerned enough about the possibility that he would render a positive test that he told CSAC executive director George Dodd he used an illegal performance enhancing drug leading up to the biggest fight of his life.

"He only indicated that he was taking it but he never indicated why," Dodd said of a conversation he and Sonnen shared during drug testing conducted by the state a day prior to the fight.

Sonnen "just let me know he was taking [something] and that's when I called over an inspector to get it documented. But when you do take it you still have to show a medical reason."

Sonnen suspended for a year.

The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) has suspended the license of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Chael Sonnen, after Sonnen tested positive for steroids, a banned substance.

A sample from Sonnen’s August 6 drug test came back with a high T/E (testosterone-to-estrogen) level, which is indicative of anaboloic steroid use. CSAC learned of the results September 2 and ordered a second test, which also came back positive for steroid use. CSAC received test results from the second sample on September 14 and suspended Sonnen two days later. He is suspended for one year. Sonnen has 30 days to appeal the decision.

“The use of anabolic steroids and other banned substances are not tolerated by the commission,” said CSAC Executive Officer George Dodd. “Anabolic agents put the health and safety of both the user and his opponents at risk.”

Sonnen’s test was observed in the presence of a CSAC representative and the sample was sent to the World Anti-doping Agency test facility at the University of California, Los Angeles on August 6, 2010 for processing.

He will state his case in December.
