McGwire Back in Baseball!

I hope he doesn't have to answer a question about him taking or not taking steroids, but it's inevitable. He'll be a good hitting coach for the Cardinals, and he has the best hitter in baseball to coach, Albert Pujols.

Uh, then what should we turn this thread into? The cheatingest manager in MLB history (LaRussa) just hired the cheatingest player in MLB history (McGwire) to become his hitting coach? Seriously?!

Aren't hitting coaches supposed to be like Rod Carew...guys who hit .350 every year with 40 strikeouts? Not guys who hit .250 every year and struck out 150 times?
 
Well in a way, but great players have a harder time being coaches than average players. Most pitching coaches around the league were never great pitchers. Two of the best pitching coaches in the league were either subpar: Mike Maddux: 39-37, 4.05 ERA, 101 ERA+ or didn't even pitch in the majors, Dave Duncan.

Plus McGwire while not a great hitter was an OBP machine, so you could be bringing him in to improve some plate discipline as well.

I hate LaRuss and McGwire, but I'm just trying to make some sense of the move. Both are cheaters, liars and cowards.

Rudy Jaramillo, largely consider one of the top hitting coaches in baseball didn't even play in the majors. 3 years in the minors.

Charley Lau, one of the more highly regarded hitting coaches of all time who was credited with helping George Brett and Frank Thomas among others: .255/.318/.365 career.

Also, can you cut the radio show crap? I honestly could give two shits if you listen to it or not. We get your schtick, you're a know it all internet tough guy... cool.

Thats not my point at all. I am talking about the type of player McGwire was, and how that type of player probably wouldn't make the best coach. He was obviously talented/roided enough to excel without ever understanding the finer points of hitting. Your comparison to Charley Lau is laughable. Your comparison to Rudy Jaramillo completely misses the point.

Guys like Mike Maddux and Dave Duncan weren't superstars, but they made the most of their limited abilities by understanding the game. To lump Mark McGwire in with those two guys is beyond comprehension.

If you honestly "understand" this hire to the point that you can criticize me, would you agree that teams will now seek out Sammy Sosa and Dave Kingman to be their hitting coaches?

In simple terms, if you were to hire a player with no coaching experience to be your batting instructor, wouldn't you hire Mark Grace instead of Sammy Sosa?

I have to side with Senser on this. The things Mac excelled at can't really be taught. He was no great hitter, just a powerful one. He drew a lot of walks because people pitched around him, fearing he might hit it 500 feet. That's not exactly a translatable skill. Either you're that kind of guy or you're not. This is similar to making Dave Kingman or Reggie Jackson or hell, Mark Reynolds your hitting coach. On top of that, he has no experience so the whole thing seems like a case of nepotism.
