Andruw McCutchens has been in their organization for a while and is the CF of the future for them and Gorkys Hernandez was going to be the CF of the future for the Braves but you have to give up talent to get it.

No, we do. See, McCutchen was thought by many still to be a year away. If you had read the rest of this thread, it also was clear that the Pirates wanted to build around McLouth (he's on a 3+1 deal), and for them to deal him was surprising.

Gorkys wasn't necessarily the CF of the future as Schafer and even Gregor Blanco were farther ahead of him. Schafer was, and is, the CF of the future for us. Morton and Locke also were logjammed a bit, too, with Hanson and Medlen in front of them.

stfu noob, the braves were overloaded on centerfield prospects, at the begining of the year they had schafer, hernandez, and anderson, got rid of hernandez and anderson, kept schafer, didnt produce, picked up mclouth

the pirates are idiots though, because they had young talent at the position, hernandez wasnt THAT valuable to the organization

i dont see any reason at all to trade arguably the MOST important player in your organization for 2 above average and 1 below average prospects

This. Plus, OF and pitching were the two strong points of our farm system. Gorkys was definitely a front line prospect but we had the depth to deal him. We'll have Hayward and Schafer for years to come. Hopefully Frenchy can get back on track at some point as well. Not to mention the possibility of moving Diory Hernandez to the OF.

Don't think this is a horrible deal for the Pirates but we definitely got a lot of value in the deal. McLouth is relatively young (28) and controllable for the net few years. Plus he fills two huge pressing needs- a leadoff man and power in the outfield.

Better him than Kelly in the leadoff I say. At least he can play everyday unlike KJ, therefore allowing everyone to settle into a more familiar spot. This way Yunel, Infante etc. don't have to pull spot duty all the time.

If you ask me, I'd say let McLouth leadoff.

They're 24-28 and their pitching has been pretty darn good this year with Duke, etc. Not too shabby.

mbuser, it wasn't really the Braves that instigated the deal. The Post-Gazette reported that basically the Pirates went to the Braves with that Morton-Gorkys-Locke deal and said accept this deal or no deal it all, that was the deal they wanted.

Houtz, good to see McCutchen doing well - that franchise needs som hope right now. Here's hoping he can actually keep up a pace remotely close to that.

And hopefully McLouth fits in well in Atlanta, I don't see why he won't. Rave reviews from guys like Chipper, Bobby Cox, McCann. Mike Gonzalez loves him (he said, and I quote, "Nate's a baller dude!" after hearing about the trade) because he played with McLouth in Pittsburgh.

Huntington said the Braves made "a offer the Pirates couldn't refuse" so I'm not buying the report that Pittsburgh approached Atlanta. If Pittsburgh wanted to trade him they could've gotten somthing better in return.

Mets had like half their team still out...pelf just had a bad game today.

I thought it was a steal for the Braves because they see that Schafer isn't ready and his defense really isn't that great neither...though I'm hearing that McLouth in CF isn't an upgrade neither...offensively, this is good for the Braves who now have more pop in their lineup.

Pirates supposedly LOVE McCutcheon but why trade for Gorkys who's essentially the same player as him? They don't have a big bat in that lineup...guess they going to build around speed and defense which isn't a bad idea at all. Also, supposedly the Braves offered this trade and loved the deal and took it. The braves offered a similar package for PEavy plus another guy but they turned it down.
