I said that I'm getting tired of the universe. Kojima always expands upon mechanics, it's why he's great. I just am tired of Snake and Big Boss.

E3 2013: Hideo Kojima Feels He Needs to Do Better on Metal Gear Solid V After Seeing Ubisoft’s The Division

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima is well known for looking with a keen eye to the western gaming industry, and apparently he has been watching quite attentively even at E3, as he expressed in an interview published today on the Japanese website 4Gamer while talking about the reception in the west for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

I thought it received a good reaction, but after seeing Ubisoft’s [TomClancy's] The Division I felt I have to work harder. At E3 we’re fighting against the powerhouses of the whole world. At one time I thought I managed to win that battle with Metal Gear Solid 3. For that reason we gave ourselves the objective to “win the world once more” with Metal Gear Solid V. The V in the title is the V for victory.

In addition to that, besides other things that were previously mentioned, Kojima shared some details about the reasons behind the choice of setting for the game in Afghanistan in 1984 and on other, different locales we can expect.

Since making Metal Gear Solid 3 I always wanted to make a game about the history of this era. In addition to that, 1984 is also the title of a novel by George Orwell and Metal Gear Solid V includes Orwellian themes.

Metal Gear Solid 3 was set in 1964, Peace Walker in 1974 and Metal Gear Solid V in 1984. We’re going in increments of ten years. It’s a balance, since teenagers nowadays weren’t yet born in 1984, but it’s not too old. That said, you can expect other settings, not just Afghanistan.

Finally, he shared more details on how stealth will work in the open world of the game:

Stealth in Metal Gear Solid V is very realistic. It’s not just a matter of following the rules of the game anymore. You can decide to just walk to your destination or ride a car. There are less sentries during the night, but you’ll be easy to spot if you turn on the headlights. Of course there are a lot more sentries during the day.

I think the definition of “real stealth simulator” is appropriate. Previously when the game was on rails players knew what to expect, because designers just put an explosion there, a collapsing wall there…It was like a haunted house.

Now weather and time will change. I wanted to make this game allowing a million of different players to play in a million of different ways.

While I’m excited like basically everyone else about Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, I have to say that I wish Kojima-san just did what he knows how do best without trying to look at the western game industry too much. Our industry already lacks diversity as it is.

If looking towards the west will just be a further spur to do better, then I sure won’t complain, but I seriously hope he’ll keep incoming influences to a minimum.

In a string of recent tweets, a designer at Halo developer 343 Studios called the design of a prominent female character in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain "disgusting."

"Our industry should know better than this," David Ellis, designer at 343 said. "...Industry full of man babies."

Ellis' complaints were in response to an image of a specific character called Quiet, a sniper character revealed at E3 who will play a prominent role in The Phantom Pain. This reveal followed a series of tweets by Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, in which he said that he encouraged art director Yoji Shinkawa to make characters appear more "erotic."

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima has asked for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’s characters to be re-designed in order to appear “more erotic.”

Speaking on Twitter, Kojima wrote that he’s been “ordering” art director Yoji Shinkawa “to make the character more erotic, and he did it well. Recently I've been making characters this way.” He added that his goal with characters is to “create the setting thoroughly, how he/she spent early life, name, style, favorite phrase, fashion, action to stand the character out.”

By making characters this way, he continued, “The initial target is to make [you] want to do cosplay or [for] its figurine to sell well.”

Kojima then announced that he will be disclosing “CG data” for the character Quiet on Friday at midnight Pacific Time and asked cosplayers to “refer to that for those planning to cosplay for Quiet at TGS.” He then noted that due to becoming more erotic, “this one may not be cosplayable,” asking, “What if no one [does] Quiet cosplay at TGS even though [I’m] giving the info?” He then added “lol” and posted “something like this for example” along with a photo of a clothed female butt.

Kojima has always had sexed-up characters in the MGS series. Then again, the conversation about the portrayal of women in video games has picked up intensity over the last couple of years, and it was probably only a matter of time before Kojima got pulled in.

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes Release Window

Konami has announced a release window of Spring 2014 for Metal Gear Solid V prologue Ground Zeroes.

Series creator Hideo Kojima also further details the link between Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which is likely to be out later next year.

"The advanced capabilities of the FOX Engine have allowed me to tell the new story in a new way," he says. "There will be a significant difference in what The Phantom Pain brings to the series, so we want to ease players into the new open world environment and its potential. As such, Ground Zeroes has been designed to introduce key elements, allowing them to fully benefit from all that the new game will offer."

Ground Zeroes consists of one mission - a Cuban rescue mission - that has been extensively demoed this year, including at Tokyo Game Show in September. It will be out on PS3, PS4, Xbox One and Xbox 360 next Spring. In the UK it will cost £19.99 on the older platforms and £29.99 on PS4 and Xbox One. In the US, it's considerably cheaper at $19.99/$29.99 respectively.

So it is a standalone then. I hope it's worth that $20 price tag though. $80 seems like a lot for the complete experience.
