Mets & Jason Bay Part Ways (WOOOOOOOO!!!!)

Mets announced this afternoon they have reached an agreement with Jason Bay and he's no longer with the franchise.

No word on how much money they gave him (they owed him about $19 million).

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that Bay will receive the $21 million remaining on his contract, including $16 million in 2013, $3 million on a buyout for 2013 and $2 million as part of a deferred signing bonus. The Mets have announced it as a "negotiated early expiration of his contract," so it's possible some money will be deferred to help lessen the burden on the payroll for 2013. Otherwise, this would just be a standard release.

So they gave him everything he was owed. Hurts but they had to do it.

I remember the days I feared Jason Bay at the plate when he played against the Reds while still in Pittsburgh.

That seems like an eternity ago.

Shit. You'd be hard pressed to find a guy in recent times to fall off as suddenly and as hardcore as Bay did. He had that one off year back in '07, but from '04-'09 he had one of the more impressive six year stretches at his position. Loved him in Boston. Sad to see him wind up the way he did in New York.

He was never really as good as I think people thought he was but man it's really hard to find a guy who hit the wall as fiercly as Bay. He went from a good, everyday, top 15 OF to unplayable in like three years.

Pirates will probably add him on a one year deal to see if he can't do anything to help them. If not them, someone will. Just as long as the Orioles don't waste a spot on him<(")

Except that the Red Sox didn't eat the contracts of the guys that left (well, less than 10% - but that's like nothing). If you showed Manny Ramirez after the Boston trade then you might be on to something. Dodgers only gave up 2 minor leaguers and the BoSox paid the rest of his contract.

They are future members of the "paid to leave" club. The 2013 Dodgers team photo will feature a lot of future members, because that team is saddled with many bad contracts.

Yeah, but if they were willing to eat the entire contract, then the team trading for him would have had to give something up. However marginal the prospect is, it's better to pay Bay the minimum (hell, even a ML deal with a tryout) on the open market and not give up anything than to make a trade and give something up. Seems like the Mets overplayed their hand.
