Mets Offer David Wright 7 Years, $100M+

Originally, Rosenthal reported the team offered him 6/$100M but Andy Martino of the NYDN says it's 7/$100M+.

By all accounts, Wright wants at least 7 years and probably at least $125M.

At this point, it's unfathomable they cannot reach an agreement before the end of the year let alone Spring Training when Wright will cut off contract talks.

With the Longoria deal setting the market in a sense, I just can't see seven years and $120 million. Lots of money to pay Wright on the downside of 30.

It's hard to do this because the Longoria deal doesn't start for three or four years. On one hand you can argue he is taking a discount because he is signing early, but on the other you can say Wright should sign for less due to Longoria's deal reflecting the inflation expected prior to the years the deal actually covers.

But that's not $20M of 2012 money. It's $20M 7 years from now.

Also, that's the price you pay to keep a team icon around. Sometimes, in certain instances it's ok to overpay, even if it gives fat Joel Sheehan a heart attack.

He can be a serviceable first baseman when he's 35 & 36.

Sometimes, you have to throw the fans a bone. Wright is set up to be a Met for life and a team icon. You live with it if he's over paid a little at the end.

The bottom line is there is really no such thing as a good long term deal for a superstar player (somebody will post an outlier). If you want to keep a superstar, you have to accept that he's going to likely make you cringe at the end.

Not everybody falls off the cliff (Paul Molitor, Rod Carew, both moved to 1B and hit until they were 40), so you gamble.

I'm just locked and loaded in believing the Mets ain't gonna win or get to the playoffs anytime soon...so, I'm not really feeling paying for players, especially older players. Wright would be the semi-exception...but over a hundo ain't for me...that's a lot of money invested in a guy that year-to-year isn't always consistent at 29, nevermind when he's 36...it'll be a shit contract for a good portion of the deal.

This also extends to conversations about extending Dickey. I'd trade Dickey to the highest bidder yesterday.

You're also right about the superstar part for Wright, but the Mets have a long rebuild ahead of them, and are still recovering from the Bernie Madoff scandal in a sense. They have to throw the fans a bone with Wright.
