I think that's a stretch saying that Pippen was one of the most complete players of all times. He could shoot, score, rebound, steal, block. He did everything. He redefined the "Point Forward." To me, he is the greatest perimeter defender of all time. I dont think Ariza will ever have the handles or court vision of Pippen nor will Ariza ever lead his team in all 5 statistical areas.

How did he redefine the point forward? He was the definition of the point forward.

I think Odom is more likely to resign than Ariza is, because Ariza is a young player who has proved A LOT in this season, making big time steals, and hitting big shots in the Finals. He's going to get big offers this off season, and LA isn't going to have the money to be able to keep him. All I've got to say is, Trevor Ariza, I am a fan.

The thing is... you have to wonder if Ariza is really just another contract year player who really stepped it up after years of mediocre play.

Now that I think about it though, I'm probably wrong about that, if I'm not mistaken he wasn't a lazy player in his early years... someone correct me if I'm wrong. But a team needing a SF will certainly spend a lot of money to try to get him.

Other than his length and perimeter defense I don't see the comparison to Pippen. Obviously Ariza can get better, but as mentioned the area where Ariza struggles is ballhandling and creating enough space to get his shot off. As great as Ariza played he did so while being the 4th option, so teams really didn't target him defensively. However, more than likely he's going to go to a bad team where he'll be expected to blossom into a star and defenses will target on him. It remains to be seen how he'll handle that, especially considering he isn't a great ballhandler and can't create his own space to get his shot off. Due to his energy, defensive versatility and ability to hit a set shot at this point in his career Ariza is the quintessential role player on a team with an already established superstar(s), so IMO he's closer to Shane Battier than he is Scottie Pippen.

it's probably fair to note that pippen was 23 during his 2nd year, the same age that ariza is currently. he's a comparison of their per-36 minute stats from their age 23 seasons

Great posts. Some players are products of the systems there are in. There is no telling that if Ariza ends up elsewhere next season, he will be able to perform as well as he did this year, let alone better.

But the comparison to Pippen is understandable. Maybe a tad far-fetched but still understandable.
