Pretty much. Golic even called Greenberg on his hypocritical stance, because during the football season he wanted the Jets to tank their games so they would get a higher draft pick.

Giving the best non-playoff team the #1 pick would be retarded. Which would you rather be...the #8 seed in your conference or the team that has the #1 overall pick? Tanking would still go on, and it would probably be more obvious because you'd have decent teams all of the sudden start losing.

I think the NBA draft lottery is one of Stern's best ideas. The NBA draft is unlike other sports...one guy can make a huge difference and usually there are only 3 or 4 really good players in each year's draft. A lottery at least doesn't outright reward tanking.

If Greenberg wants to limit tanking, then they should recalibrate the amount of ping pong balls the losingest teams get. Make it more even with the "below average" teams.

BTW, Greenberg has gone from slightly annoying to full-on corporate shill retard in the last few years.

It's a dumbass idea with no basis. The same thing would be happening just at a different level, instead you'd have good teams (those in the 6th-8th playoff spots) suddenly benching starters and trying to get to that #1 spot.
 
And yeah tanking does kind of suck, but it does allow teams to really restructure, play younger kids and it's done wonders for the NBA D-League and giving opportunities to guys that otherwise wouldn't play while a team tries to get to .500 with some mediocre vets.
 
At the end of the day most NBA teams know there's probably 5 teams with even a remote chance of winning an NBA title in any given year. Doesn't matter what order the lottery is generated in.
 
Totally agree. Bad is bad, especially in the NBA. The difference between the 9th seed and the dead last team isn't that bad, there's a talent deficiency no matter which way you slice it.
 
How about do the lottery, but go in reverse order for percentages. Like right now, the worst team has like a 25% chance of getting the top pick, but instead, make it so the best non-playoff team has that chance and it goes down until the worst team has the worst percentage. Do this lottery only for the top two picks, then the team with the worst record is automatically 3rd (if not selected by the lottery), 2nd worst goes next, and so on. This makes it so teams will want to win more games if out of the playoffs, but teams won't tank on purpose to miss the playoffs since it is only a chance they get the top pick and if they don't, they'd be selecting like 16th.

Either way, I like the current system, but it is fun to play the what if game.
 
Make em play for it? 1 game elimination tournament? or even a modified event where they play 1 quarter games (so basically like it's overtime or something) and get a bunch of teams together in one location (fill the house, put it on TV, make that paper) to play for draft positioning.
 
Each non-playoff team selects one player from their team to participate in a dunk contest. Dr. J, Kathy Griffin, and Roger Staubach act as judges. Winner of the dunk contest gets #1 overall pick.

EDIT: I just want to say that although Greenberg's idea was immediately bashed here, on CCS it took 3 pages before someone said they thought it was a bad idea. Amazing.

I like parity. i like the idea of every team having a chance to win, if they manage and build their teams right. This is a league that has had a total of 8 or 9 teams win the title since 1980.

Lakers (10) 11 if you want to count 1979
Celtics (4)
Spurs (4)
Bulls (6) 25 titles between four teams is just not good for the league. Overall.
Heat (1)
Houston (2)
Dallas (1)
Detroit (3)

That's not good for the league. That's why I like baseball and Football. Because while certain will always suck, more teams have a chance to win than in the NBA.

People always bring this shit up but there's a reason why you can trace back to the inception of the NBA with dynasties. It's a sport that simply lends itself to stars dominating. There's no way you'll ever get parity like in the NFL and the MLB.

Likewise, most of the NFL parity is a result of a ridiculous player abusing salary cap structure and injures. It's hard to really recreate that in a game where people don't break their legs, tear their ACLs or bruise their brains on a weekly basis.
 
Jeff Van Gundy brought up a good idea during the Lakers/Thunder game. He said that the lottery should be expanded to the last couple of playoff teams (didn't specify the amount), so that the teams trying to make the playoffs wouldn't be punished for doing so.

That idea sucks. It doesnt address the issue of the worst teams tanking, and it encourages playoff teams to drop down to lower seeds.
