Mike Greenberg: Give best non-playoff team the #1 pick

That idea sucks. It doesnt address the issue of the worst teams tanking, and it encourages playoff teams to drop down to lower seeds.

Teams would never try to drop to a lower seed. Why would a six seed give up a winnable matchup and "tank" to finish eighth and face certain elimination?

What it would do, is encourage the 9-12 teams to keep playing hard, because they could potentially benefit on both ends - making the playoffs, and still being part of the lottery. As is stands now, there are probably some teams that would rather finish 9th and get some ping pong balls than get swept in the first round. Thus, they tank.

It's not a terrible idea.

Tanking is gonna happen regardless...it still is going on so teams can get the most ping-pong balls...

the only thing I'd suggest is to tier them to maybe teams 1-4 each have the same amount of ping pong balls in the lottery to get the #1 pick, then the 5-8 teams get the next slot, then 9-12...something to that effect.

The whole idea of tanking is so overblown. You cannot make these players want to lose, its very difficult to make players quit. Management can try to tank, coaches can try to tank, but outside of possibly the Bobcats theres no team out there that even looks like they're "tanking". Most of these guys have huge egos and do not like to lose, I watch a lot of bad teams go out and play hard nightly, whether or not management wants them to win is a different issue, but players still want to win.
