Ryan Smyth returns to Oilers

EDMONTON -- Ryan Smyth is going to have a chance to finish his career with the Edmonton Oilers.

The veteran forward signed a $4.5-million, two-year contract with the Oilers just before free agency opened Sunday.

Smyth played all 82 games for Edmonton last season, registering 19 goals and 46 points.

The 36-year-old was the sixth overall pick by the Oilers in 1994 and has spent 12 of his 16 NHL seasons with the team.

In 1,151 career games, Smyth has 374 goals and 806 points.

From the Caps live blog, D Joe Corvo signed a one year deal with the Canes, giving them a solid puck mover on the blueline.

That Moss signing indicates to me that the Coyotes may be preparing for Doan to depart. Moss has struggled to stay healthy for his career, but plays a very similar game to Doan and is a low risk/high reward signing.

Armstrong heading to Habs

The Montreal Canadiens have signed free agent forward Colby Armstrong to a one-year, $1 million contract. Bought out of the final year of a three-year deal by the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, Armstrong will play for the Canadiens while still collecting $1 million from the Leafs in 2012-13.

The gritty forward was due one more year of a three-year, $9 million contract he signed with the Maple Leafs in 2010.

Armstrong scored one goal and added two assists in 29 games with the Maple Leafs in 2011-12. In 439 career games with the Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins and Atlanta Thrashers, Armstrong has scored 87 goals and 117 assists.
He was originally selected in the first round (21st overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Penguins.

Leighton re-signs with Flyers

PHILADELPHIA -- The Flyers re-signed free-agent goaltender Michael Leighton on Sunday, the first day of NHL free agency.

Leighton, 31, spent most of last season in the AHL, but could be a backup to Flyers starter Ilya Bryzgalov this season. Philadelphia's No. 2 last season, Sergei Bobrovsky, was dealt to Columbus during the NHL draft last month.

Originally acquired by the Flyers in December 2009, Leighton has spent part of the last three seasons with Philadelphia. He also appeared in four games for the Flyers during the 2006-07 season. In 32 career regular-season games for Philadelphia, Leighton is 19-7-2 with a 2.68 goals-against average.

Brad Boyes signs one year, $1 million deal with the Islanders, and they also signed D Matt Carkner to a three year, $4.5 million deal. Boyes has certainly fallen off the face of the earth, and I don't even think being with the Isles with next to no expectations can help him.

Sharks sign Adam Burish to four year deal worth $1.8 million each year.

Ottawa having a busy day today.

OTTAWA -- The Ottawa Senators acquired defenceman Marc Methot and signed forward Guillaume Latendresse on a busy opening day of free agency.

Methot came over from Columbus in exchange for forward Nick Foligno. The 27-year-old Methot is an Ottawa native who had spent his entire NHL career with the Blue Jackets.

Latendresse will be looking to revive his NHL career in the nation's capital after agreeing to a US$1.25-million, one-year deal. He played just 27 games combined over the past two seasons with the Minnesota Wild, scoring eight goals and 15 points.

He missed 50 games due to a concussion last year.

Latendresse is a former second-round pick of the Montreal Canadiens and spent parts of four seasons with the team.

Also Sunday, Ottawa signed defenceman Mike Lundin to a one-year deal while agreeing to a three-year, entry-level contract with prospect Shane Prince.

Lundin had two assists in 17 games during an injury plagued season with Minnesota that saw him miss 48 games.

Prince had 43 goals and 47 assists with the Ontario Hockey League's Ottawa 67's last season after being drafted 61st overall by the Senators in 2011.

Free agent defenceman Bryan Allen has signed a three-year, $10.5 million contract with the Anaheim Ducks.

Allen spent the past two plus seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes. The defensive defenceman recorded one goal and 14 points last season. Prior to his time in Carolina, Allen played for the Florida Panthers and Vancouver Canucks. In 601 career games, the 31-year-old has 29 goals and 118 points.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed free agent defenceman Sami Salo. It's a two-year deal worth $3.75 million per year.

Salo has spent the past nine years with the Vancouver Canucks, tallying nine goals and 25 points in 69 games last season.

The 37-year-old is entering his 14th NHL season. In 761 career games, Salo has 93 goals and 305 points.

The Finnish native has won an Olympics silver medal in 2006 and a bronze in 2010.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed C Jay McClement to a two-year deal worth $3 million.

The 29-year-old McClement recorded 10 goals and 17 points in 80 games with the Colorado Avalanche last season. Through seven NHL seasons, McClement has recorded 63 goals and 177 points with Colorado and the St. Louis Blues.

The Leafs also signed restricted free agent forward Matt Frattin to a two-year contract, and forward Ryan Hamilton and G Jussi Rynnas to one-year deals.

Frattin split the year with the Maple Leafs and Marlies of the AHL. Frattin played 56 games with the big club, recording eight goals and 15 points. He will make $850,000 per year on a one-way contract.

Hamilton played two games with the Leafs last season, picking up an assist.

Rynnas, 25, spent time in the ECHL and AHL but also played two games with the Leafs in 2011-12.

Hamilton and Rynnas were each given two-way deals.

I believe they also have an offer into Suter at least. Minnesota apparently sent offers to both Suter and Parise, though it looks like it will be a couple days before they decide anything, if they don't take longer.

TSN said Minny, Detroit and Philly sent both Suter and Parise offers.

I think there was one more team that did the same thing but I cannot remember.
