This is a case when stats only tell you part of the story. Use common sense, Heyward is the better overall player.

Remember that Heyward 's average hit the tank with a.181 July (bruised thumb which eventually led to a DL stint.)

Since the DL stint, Heyward has outperformed Posey.

Posey's 1st half: .350/.389/.569
Posey's 2nd half: .283/.340/.472

Heyward's 1st half: .251/.366/.455
Heyward's 2nd half: .302/.419/.457


Without the injury, Heyward put together the most complete season.

Not to mention he started from opening day and is the Braves best overall player at 20-years old.

Oh, and he posted the 5th best OBP in the entire league, and the 8th-best OBP and third-highest walk total EVER for a player under 20.

too lazy to look this up, but im sure the record where posey was catching was significantly better than when he wasnt (just sayin)

Their record since then: 52-32

Posey probably had a few starts at catcher before Molina was traded; but they didn't start winning until Posey took over full time. With Posey at catcher, the Giants had 18 consecutive games where they gave up three or less runs. The last time that was done was 1917.

Posey was more important to his team than Heyward.

You could make a case for either one based on the "important to his team" criteria, but I'd argue that Heyward was more important. Look at the lineup the Braves are trotting out right now, it's one of the worst offenses a playoff team has ever fielded.

He's not just our only competent OF, he's the only OF who is above replacement level. Not to mention injuries to 3/4 of our opening day infield, including our leadoff hitter (Prado) our 3-hole guy (Chipper), and our 4-5 hole hitter (Glaus).

After Chipper went down, Heyward became THE GUY on our offense. The Giants relied heavily on Posey, but still got contributions from other hitters (Huff, Burrell, Uribe).

You may think Juan Uribe is terrible (he is), but his 85 RBI is 8 more than the Braves leader, McCann with 77. His 24 homers would lead the team. Without its 1, 3 or 5 hitters, the Braves offense because a sinking ship that was kept afloat only by Heyward and McCann. The addition of Derrek Lee helped, but this was still a two-man offense for months. All Heyward did was get on base in 33 of the last 34 games.

Heyward's team ranks: 2nd in HR, 2nd in RBI, 3rd in BA, 1st in OBP, 1st in OPS, 1st in SB

As a rookie. On a playoff team.

Leading a playoff team in multiple offensive categories would lend to one's case that he is important to his team.

Team wise, the averages are nearly identical (.257 to .256) in average and the Giants have a 13 HR advantage (162 to 139). The Giants have 5 regulars on the postseason roster with an OPS above .800, the Braves have just 3. The Braves have a huge advantage in total runs but in the second half they've produced runs at around the same rate. (105 runs for the Braves this month, 106 for the Giants.)

Atlanta's offense was fine halfway through the year, then it lost its #3 and 5 hitters to injuries. To make things worse, three weeks ago the team lost its team MVP, Martin Prado.

Now, the Braves offense is absolutely horrendous and has no business in the playoffs. Giants easily have a stronger lineup.

the reason your individual stats are so lowered is only because of injuries, you guys just added lee (who by the way has 80 rbi's between the cubs and braves) im not gonna say that the giants are a lot worse, but to say the giants lineup is easily stronger is a terrible argument. let alone to argue that heyward had to pick up more than posey did. smh
