RIP West
I was watching random Rick Ankiel highlights this morning and thought this would could generate a little bit of discussion.
For me, it would have to be between Ankiel's implosion in 2000 NLDS Game 1 (especially considering I was in the hospital watching that game, made it worse) and Darryl Kile's death in 2002.
Although his comeback story has been a remarkable one, there's still always going to be that "what if" factor with Ankiel that resides in me. The way that Tony LaRussa took it makes it more painful, saying that pitching him in that game was "a decision that perhaps haunts him more than any he has ever made".
Kile was a favorite of mine from the moment he got to St. Louis in 2000 (side-note: that 2000 Cardinals team was one of my childhood favorites and I hated the Mets for knocking us out in the NLCS that year...which made beating them in 2006 so much sweeter :motte
and I still remember watching that day in 2002 when Joe Girardi announced the game was canceled, then later on crying when it was announced he passed away. I changed my number to #57 for the summer travel team in Little League as a "tribute" to him.
On a more recent note, I'd say 2010 could be considered. It sucked watching the Reds win the division after all the bullshit that went on between us that year.
