Over the past few months, mostly since the release of madden 10, I've notice a new outlook on Madden. Long gone are the day of guys who play for the love of the game or to simulate the real NFL. Now you have more people trying to become "The Man" and be the next Madden Challenge Champion.
When I first started playing online, there were guys who were better than me, but eventually I started getting better and better to the point where I could beat some of those guys on a regular basis. What happened was I started to gain respect from those guys because, although my game improved, I still remained humbled and had that "respect" from them. Guys like Mad Sci. RainyT, even LiquidRob, among others, those guys played you with respect and gave you props whether you won or lost. There was rarely any pumping of the chest and most of the time they offered advice to help your game in a SIM way, and not proving ebooks to cheese the AI. I remember playing and challenging Mobb almost every day because he was "the man" and even though he kicked my ass regularly, not once did he talk shit to me. It's to the point now where there is a mutual respect from each other no matter who wins.
I liking it to when I was younger and playing basketball with the older guys, I knew my place. Those guys were the "mentors" and you respected them, and in return they had your back no matter what. Now you have younger guys who come on the court and if you "disrespect" their game, they want to shoot you.
Now I see a lot of guys who come on board trying to "take" respect by talking. Whether you are a good player or not, imo, it's better to have respect of your madden brethren than to be labeled an asshole. Guys want to be the man, belittle their opponent, and, for the most part, brag about being able to manipulate the AI. You get no respect from that, and ultimately, in the long run, you lose. I've had talks with some guys in the past and I think I've helped their game someone. Mot to make them a better madden player, but to be a better sim player
I know this is just a game, but for the most part, a lot of us have "grown up together." From high school, to college/military, to having families now. It would be sad for many of us to stop playing the game because some people really don't know how to "truely" play the game. Which I think has happened. It's a lot harder to find a game of madden because, the older guys, like myself, have things we now have to do outside of madden, but at the same time when we actually do have the time to play, it's vs New Age madden players and it's basically a waste of time. I hope things change soon..
And for those who read all of this...a treat for you
