It is about the NFL taking over the calendar.
NFL runs from some years, late July (start of pre-season) to early February (Super Bowl). By moving the draft from April to May, they are starting the league calendar year later...instead of an early February end, and late February start, its an early February end, early March start, but it expands the league calendar into what are previous dead periods of May and June. So, essentially, the NFL is fucking occupying the whole damn calendar year.

This is yet another Rorschach test. Some will see this as an obvious attempt to squeeze more relevance and cash out of the calendar year (as Larry notes above) at the risk of oversaturation, and others will lap it up like the mouthbreathing plebes the shield and ESPN knows it can count on to watch "NFL 32" with Trey Wingo all year long.
The sensible types (w2b, Larry, etc.) will see this for what it is and the derps (Zoneblitz, et al) will be all like "FUCK YEAH MOAR FOOTBALL"

Rich Eisen scooped this a few weeks back on Chris Russo's show on Sirius. He knew it was coming and supposedly got into some hot water for spilling the beans because I guess he was told off the record or something. And the reasoning is just like Larry says, to stretch out the calendar and squeeze another month of draft talk/build out of the media.
Eisen's other nugget that he said was coming, was a uniform "NFL Training Camp Opening Day", with all 32 team and all players reporting to camp on the same day across the league. No more staggered camp openings, rookies coming in early, etc. This will be pushed as a big event, much like the draft, combine, opening night, etc.

It's good for the league provided people eat up more draft hype. No reason to think they won't, at least short term.
I was astounded back in April, when an episode of NFL Live was not starting on time because a baseball game airing on ESPN2 was running long, and twitter basically had an aneurysm with people complaining in droves and having panic attacks because NFL fucking Live wasn't on at 4:30 on the dot. It also happened to be MLB Opening Day, but that's neither here nor there. The point here is people were going apeshit that ESPN wouldn't abandon the game to put on NFL Live. This wasn't September during the season, it was APRIL. There was no news. There was nothing going on. But apparently, there are people who plan their day around NFL Live year round, to the point they were legit angry that the show wasn't starting on time.
I don't know for fact, but I would suspect things like NFL Live & NFL 32 see higher ratings during draft build up, which probably carries over for a week or two following the draft, before settling in at a lower level until camps open. So what the NFL is trying to do, is extend those periods to essentially last year round. I can't blame them, but there will come a point where the public will not (or can not) consume anymore NFL.

Regarding what NAHSTE said...he was obviously right about the sensible types. But I think the implication that the Zoneblitz's of the world will be happy with this is wrong. No matter how blind or dumb they may be, at the end of the day no fan wants to wait even more time for the draft(right?). This is a form of saturation that I don't see anyone getting down with, so I was expecting immediate and significant "backlash" from both sides.
But I didn't take into consideration that the 2nd group of people would still continue to tune in everyday regardless. So short term I guess this will work despite the fact that it wont a popular change. Hopeless:suicide:

I know right? People keep complaining about the NFL being overexposed, but as of right now people can't get enough of it, so the NFL is simply doing what is should do while the iron is hot. Much like when people complained about making the draft a 3 day event as opposed to a 2 day drag....people just adjust and continue to enjoy.

Disagree. Constant ignoring of HGH use in the NFL will be the death of the NFL, if such a death ever happens (Not happening for a long time btw).. but many safety concerns could easily be solved if they actually tested guys for HGH.
As for pushing the league calendar back a few weeks so that they have an event going on during every month of the year, who the hell cares?
