NFL Draft to move to May starting in 2014

Look, it's the Pro Bowl, so who gives a shit, but a minor concern is that people use Pro Bowl appearances to support hall of fame arguments and the like, so cheapening the selection process is something that could be a problem. But with that said, nothing could be worse than letting fans decide these things, and the fact that half of the players fake injuries to avoid the game leading to an artificial amount of "Pro Bowl" players. I think one year, something like 11% of the league was named to the Pro Bowl roster.

It'll be done like hockey, where there is a pool of talent that make the All-Star game and the captains pick from that group. There is no change in who is actually an All-Star or not, just how they divide up those teams.

I was a huge draftnik until this year. Seems like I got out at just the right time, as the discussion of players will get ridiculously unbearable with even more time before the draft. The topics and player discussion is already re-hashed 1,000 times over. I always thought the turnaround from the NC to the Senior Bowl/Shrine game was too quick, but other than that, the wait for the draft was too long. You could condense the Pro Day schedule to the first 3 weeks of March and have the draft in the first week of April.

But it's branding and a money grab and strategic moves by a bunch of guys hell-bent on getting me to hate the NFL, so it's about par for the course with the NFL. I already didn't even watch the draft because it took entirely too long, and the discussion of who's going where was played out by the end of February. Oh, and Chris Berman.

Clearly though i'm not the majority, because it's an enormous television hit, and the new format predictably has turned out much better for television. If anything, they'll stretch it out even longer if they think they can drag another night of primetime out of the viewer.

Sure, the NFL is enormously popular, but I find it hard to believe that the people of Denver or St Louis or Houston or Baltimore will flock to a ballroom to watch anonymous players get drafted in rounds 4-7.

I am sure Hasselbeck or many of the other shield shills will be able to kindly inform you how wrong you are based on TV ratings for rounds 4-7 compared to TV ratings of handpicked NBA or MLB games. Any second now, just sit tight.

If they move it back, it should be two days again. But that won't happen. If the ratings are up due to this being later, which I am unsure will happen, it might very well stay in May. It's awful though.
