NFL pass interference penalty: Should be like college

The college game has this right...the penalty for pass interference should be 15 yards & automatic first down...not a spot foul.

In the NFL, its pretty absurd how a judgment call, many times which is wrong, or can be barely detected even if right, can result in a 50+ yard penalty and completely change the scope or outcome of the game.

Not only that, but the penalty assumes that the offensive player would have caught the ball if not for the interference, which is also stupid...just as was the NFL force-out rule, which has been done away with.

I agree with ZB in principle, but the above quote would be something that you would see a couple of times per week.

Maybe something for 'blatant' pass interference, which would still be a spot foul, but that's just convoluted, and the NFL has too many rules as it is.

I don't ever really recall they murdering the WR, but you do see blatant PI when guys are beat deep, yeah. It's not an epidemic, or anything. But it happens.

So it's just a matter of deciding what is worse. Blatant PI to break up big pass plays and give a free 15, or 50 yard penalties that are sometimes undeserved.

I would still lean towards the 15 yarder personally.

Ejection, as well as additional punishment, up to and including death by stereo.

We keep guys out of games for gaining competitive advantages in other ways.. I don't see why blatantly tackling a receiver who beats you on a route to prevent a TD is any different.

If you are intentionally doing something illegal to gain a competitive advantage you are a cheater and should be punished like the other cheaters. :yep:

I agree that it would be pretty subjective in a lot of instances but there are plenty of times watching CFB over the years where I have seen DBs not even try and veil the fact that they were just going to maul a receiver 30 yards down the field and take the 15 rather than trying to play defense.

I've then comically heard the announcers refer to what a "smart play" it was by the DB. If committing a penalty can be considered a heady decision something is broken.

They can review if a ball was tipped before the PI occurred but the can of worms that would be opened by a ref looking at a back judge's PI call on replay and overturning it would get dicey over time.

It wouldn't be long before people would want to review holding and false starts too.

Less rules, less reviews. The NFL has already made the game nearly impossible to officiate.

Leave the spot fouls or change it to 15, i'm ok with either and lead towards the 15, but please don't add another reviewable call.

On a side note, the whole review process seriously has to be changed. The "booth upstairs" should have officials who are qualified to make a call. They should see it instantly, make a decision, radio down to the head ref and tell him if they fucked up or not.

Why does the in-game ref have to go through the whole process?

In college football this does happen, but its pretty rare. It happens mostly only when DBs are completely beat and have no deep help. But most times if the DB is close enough to tackle, hes close enough to attempt to break up the pass.

Like KG said, i rather see this than undeserved 50 yard bombs.

Also, the NFL DB's are sometimes so scared to get flagged that they barely defend the pass and allow easy catches. This change in penalty would allow defenders more confidence in defending passes.

Almost every new rule has been created to favor the offense, its time defense gets one break their way.

i whole-heartedly agree that the NFL penalty should be 15 yards. too many of the defensive penalties are already geared to help the offense anyway with the automatic 1st downs for illegal contact and defensive holding. this is the only penalty that assumes the offended party is going to be successful 100% of the time.
in regard to the blatant penalty, it happens in the pros too. would you rather give up a 50 yard penalty where you can interfere with the WR or give up the TD? by taking the penalty, there are still opportunities for the D to get the ball back.
