DAVIE, Fla. -- A gimmick? Nonsense? The Miami Dolphins don't like the way their Wildcat offense is being belittled.


"If you don't want us to keep running it, stop it," Brown said. "Then we'll have to go to something else."

The New York Jets were less than gracious after they failed to tame the Wildcat on Monday night in a 31-27 loss at Miami. The Dolphins gained 110 yards with the formation, including 2 on their final play for the winning score with 6 seconds left.

Jets coach Rex Ryan described the Wildcat as a gimmick out of college. Linebacker Calvin Pace called the formation "nonsense."

"I can't respect that stuff, all that Wildcat, because we're in the NFL, man," Pace told The New York Times.

Pace amended his comments Wednesday, saying he tipped his hat to the Dolphins. Miami guard Justin Smiley said he couldn't understand the earlier remarks because the Wildcat involves little trickery.

"We're not running any gimmick plays," Smiley said. "I don't think this catches anybody off guard. You know it's coming. Stop it if you can."

Also defending the Wildcat were Dolphins defenders amused by the Jets' frustration.



"I love nonsense," Miami linebacker Channing Crowder said. "They want to say gimmick this, gimmick that. The Wildcat is an offensive formation we've been running for two years. They have thousands of plays on film about it. Go stop it and shut up all the junk talking. They ain't going to give us no credit? We'll see them in three weeks."

The Dolphins-Jets rematch is Nov. 1. Perhaps Pace was mindful of that when he spoke about the Wildcat on Wednesday, backpedaling more furiously than any Jets defender did in the game.

"I said some things, and I definitely should've probably thought about it and rephrased it a little bit," Pace said. "That being said, I respect the Dolphins and I respect their team because they beat us. It's not like they went out there and stole the game from us."

There is no cheese i real football. You cant say trick plays are cheese in the nfl. When the 'Phins line up in the wildcat you know what is comming. NFL stats dont read "yards rushing from trick plays" all it is is yards rushing. I really don't see why they are complaining about the wildcat anyway, did they forget that chad henne tore them up in his 2nd start. 20-26 for 241 yards. 2td no picks. And that wasn't out of the wildcat.

It comes down to execution and talent, just like any other formation.

The Dolphins have gotten better at running the Wildcat because they have fine tuned their execution, expanded their playbook, and have bolstered their offensive line. Having two all-pro running backs doesn't hurt, either.

At the same time, defenses will be better prepared the second time around.

Knowing how to stop it and physically stopping it are two entirely different things. Rex Ryan obviously knows what needs to be done to contain it, but it comes down to the players on his defense to execute the assignments properly.

I think the Jets will be better prepared for it the next time around. And Ronnie Brown averaged 3.5 yards a carry against the Jets so it's not like he was just running all over them.

What really hurt the Jets was the time of possession that the Fins had the ball for. Teams need to do a better job of stopping the Fins on 3rd down or they are going to be in for a long night and get worn out.

Yeah, and to go along with that, I thought it was pretty clear watching the game (and the Dolphins/Colts game) that Miami was the far more physical football team. The Wildcat is working because the Dolphins are dominating the guys in front of them.. not because it's a "gimmick" or "trick play". Because really, the Wildcat is nothing more than a ghost reverse (where the receiver goes in motion and the QB gives the ball to the RB and fakes it to the WR coming across).

it's funny, the Jets run a pretty good wildcat, especially when one of our WR's, Brad Smith can handle the football (when he really doesn't...Washington does this).

What does it take to effectively contain the Wildcat? Does the importance shift to any certain group of defenders or...what? I really have no clue. I would guess faster LB's to keep up with any hand-offs or pitches of the ball, but I really don't know.

You know how a defense will bring a safety into the box to help against the run? The Wildcat is bascially the offenses version of that. They're adding a blocker in the running game because everyone is involved in the play (because normally the QB hands off the ball and he's no longer involved in the play. If the running back IS the quarterback, you now have one additional blocker).

But just like an 8-man front is beatable, so is the Wildcat. The problem is you need a seperate scheme designed to stop it.. chances are you can't play your shell Cover 1 defense and be effective, you need to make sure your safeties are rotating properly with the motion, everyone knows their role in protecting their gap, and the pass is adequately covered. And teams only have a week to prepare for it, which makes it even more effective.

Even with all of this, though, you still need your players to perform on the field. Miami's offensive line has been nothing short of dominant this season, and they're leading the league in rushing with or without the Wildcat as far as I'm concerned. When your offensive line is pushing people back, AND you have an extra blocker, that's when you can get 6-10 yards per carry by running one formation.

no, only teams with various weaknesses run the wildcat for a stint here and there. The fact is, a team that relies heavily on the wildcat will not go deep into the playoffs. its just a run play and wont be effective in the long run.

the Dolphins won , big deal. Neither the jets nor' Dolphins will be major playoff contenders. They may get in, but thats it.

The Jets were too bland against the wild cat. Put 9/10 guys in the box and just read off the play. Keep one safety back just in case. Idk what the problem is with stopping it.
