NFL to eliminate extra point?

The most exciting play in football might be coming to an end. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said on Monday that the league is considering a proposal to eliminate extra points.

"The extra point is almost automatic," Goodell said, via NFL.com. "I believe we had five missed extra points this year out of 1,200 some odd. So it's a very small fraction of the play, and you want to add excitement with every play."

Goodell's right about the missed extra points. There were only five missed all season and four of those were blocked. But that begs the question, what would the NFL do to replace extra points?

"There's one proposal in particular that I've heard about," Goodell said. "It's automatic that you get seven points when you score a touchdown, but you could potentially go for an eighth point, either by running or passing the ball, so if you fail, you go back to six."

Basically, under this proposal, you'd get seven points for a touchdown unless you decide you want an eighth point. If you go for the eighth point and fail, you'd only get six points for the score.

Someone who's probably on board with this proposal is Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who said earlier this month that extra points were becoming too easy.

"I would be in favor of not seeing it be an over 99 percent conversion rate," Belichick said. "It's virtually automatic. That's just not the way the extra point was put into the game. It was an extra point that you actually had to execute and it was executed by players who were not specialists, they were position players. It was a lot harder for them to do... I don't think that's really a very exciting play because it's so automatic."

Belichick didn't say at the time if he wanted to see the extra point replaced or eliminated altogether.

The top-17 scorers in the NFL this season were all kickers. If extra points had been eliminated in 2013, Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles would have tied Ravens kicker Justin Tucker and Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski as the NFL's scoring leader.

Extra points are rarely exciting, but sometimes they are. In a 2003 game, New Orleans was trailing Jacksonville 20-13 with seven seconds left. The Saints scored on an improbable 75-yard, three-lateral pass play to cut the Jaguars lead to 20-19, but kicker John Carney missed the extra point to give Jacksonville the win.

I think the elimination of the extra point is a solid idea. Either that or make the kick in the 35+ yard range where there is at least a chance it will be missed.

I'm okay with this proposed rule change.

I also think field goals and safety's should be swapped with each other points-wise, field goals are near automatic from anywhere these days, and forcing a team off the end of the field is quite the feat, should be worth more than 2 points in my opinion.

I think what they proposed is perfect even if the reasoning is stupid. Citing how players almost never miss an XP as a reason to get rid of it is retarded. How many kickers were you expecting to miss a 19 yard field goal? The proposal keeps the point system basically the same just without the actual kick. Things basically still will work the same way.

XP's are way too easy because no player besides the long snapper, placeholder, and kicker give a fuck. Watch any XP and every down lineman just stands up at the snap and lets it happen.

Much like field goals...get rid of "roughing the kicker"...let the players actually play and try to make a play...if they even breathe on a kicker and they flop, they'll get called for it...risk =/= reward, so they just stand up at the snap and give'em the kick uncontested.

Fuck going "for two"...extra points should be running a play, from the two yard line for ONE point. Two point conversions moved back to the five yard line if you're getting rid of the kick.

No contact with the long snapper is a legit rule change, especially in a league that is promoting head trauma awareness.

However, not allowing the LaVar Leap or not allowing the rushers to bend the corner and accelerate toward the kicker is pretty ridiculous.

Watch a kick from the 60s or 70s...slower developing plays. Kickers are so advanced now, the snap and kick happen almost instantaneously. For a defender to accelerate out of his stance, get around a defender and break toward the point to make contact with the ball causing a block takes more time than give in the first place (we're talking a total of 2-3 seconds for all this shit to happen)...adding the caveat of "don't hit the kicker or be fined and penalized" is ridiculous and just basically tells defenders to stand up and walk to the sideline.

Why is the proposed rule idiotic though? I don't understand how it's a half measure. It keeps things exactly as they are in terms of how the points play out just without the kick. You're getting rid of one meaningless play. Thats all the rules does. Thats its purpose.
