NFL to eliminate extra point?

Get rid of the XP kick, but instead of going back to six if you fail, you should stay at seven. This way teams have nothing to lose by going for that eighth point, and it would be attempted more often, thus creating more exciting plays.
Exciting plays = viewers
Viewers = ratings
Ratings = $$ which has been the main priority of the NFL for a long time.

Why is the proposed rule idiotic though? I don't understand how it's a half measure. It keeps things exactly as they are in terms of how the points play out just without the kick. You're getting rid of one meaningless play. Thats all the rules does. Thats its purpose.

Yeah, the article makes it sound more complicated than it is.

It's take the free point (which is essentially the same as they do now at 99.9%), or go for two. It isn't complicated, it's just eliminating the kick.

I'm curious if the player scoring the TD would get credit for a full 7 if they bypass the kick, or credit for 6 with the extra point being scored as a "team" point like they do with some safeties.

In that scenario every team would be going for a two point conversion every single time. I could live with that if they moved it back to the 5. When it comes to this topic I kind of have the "if it's not broke don't fix it" mindset which is why I really like the proposal. Nothing wrong with change but I don't want the XP play to end up becoming gimmicky or weird or something that seems like it would come from the AFL.

I also like how the points end up adding up in todays NFL. A 16-14 game after both teams score two TD's would kind of bother me. I feel like that sort of thing would become the regular.

You're right here, I probably should've said this is what the NFL probably will do because of the last line of my original post. The NFL has become just a big scramble for money. I do like the original proposal though.

Forcing the 2-pt attempt on every conversion would fundamentally change the entire balance of the sport. I don't see a need for that. The goal here should be to eliminate the useless play, not make a change that greatly alters the game.

It wouldn't force teams to try the 2-pt conversion every time. They could still opt out of it, they just wouldn't be dropped to six if they failed.

But under those rules you would have nothing to lose by going for it so if those were the rules every team would be going for the 2 pt conversion because you would have no reason not to. Thats why the drop to 6 points is so important.

Most teams don't carry three quarterbacks, so the third string quarterback is usually the kicker or punter anyways.

I hate them. I don't watch them because they are so redundant. So even if something exciting happens like a shank or block, well I just missed a crucial play. I watch at least 6 hours of NFL on Sunday so I play the percentages when it comes to taking breaks. Usually a touchdown is a great chance to go for a piss or get a cup of tea because it goes, XP - Advert - Touchback most of the time.

That's another thing, thanks to the NFL rule changes the kickoff is now far too often the second most boring play in football.

well 61% of people don't like the idea. The NFL is just throwing the idea out there as of yet to see how its perceived.

I still want the league to keep its roots and call it football...or only keeping a 3 pointer/field goal makes the kicker the ulyimate relief pitcher who may only get one kick in a game.

jazz it up...if you score a 3rd TD you have to go for 2 every time you score after that. That way the kicker got a couple warm up shots in
