There are many ways to look at the NFL, but the easiest - and most tedious – method to figure out what is going on is by examining the numbers.
Here is a numerical look at the league heading into Week 12:
1 – Touchdown pass thrown by Green Bay Packers quarterback Scott Tolzien in his past two starts. By no coincidence, Green Bay was defeated in both games.
2.8 – Yards per carry by Trent Richardson since he was acquired in a trade by Indianapolis earlier this season.
6 – Playoff teams from last season are not above .500 in 2013 – Atlanta (2-8), Houston (2-8), Minnesota (2-8), Washington (3-7), Baltimore (4-6) and Green Bay (5-5).
7 – Wins by the Carolina Panthers this season, matching their win total in 2012.
18 – Individual 400-yard passing performances this season, including Carson Palmer’s 419 yards against Jacksonville on Sunday, which ties the previous single-season record set in 2011.
20 – Turnovers committed by New York Jets rookie cornerback Geno Smith (16 interceptions and four fumbles lost). Over Smith’s past four games, four of his six interceptions have been returned for touchdowns.
18.3 – Points per game allowed by New Orleans, plus 305.4 yards per game, which has the Saints ranked in the top five in both categories. Last season, New Orleans was ranked toward the bottom of both groups.
41 – Sacks allowed by the Miami Dolphins, which is a league-high.
42 – Touchdown passes by Tom Brady on Monday Night Football in 18 games, tying Steve Young, who achieved that mark in 25 games, for third most in NFL history. Dan Marino threw 74 touchdown passes (38 games), while Brett Favre had 69 (38 games).
128 – Passer rating by Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles, which leads the league. Foles has thrown 16 touchdowns and no interceptions this season, and is in contention for Aaron Rodgers’ single-season record (122.5) during his Most Valuable Player endeavor in 2011.
137.5 – Passer rating by Tampa Bay’s Mike Glennon against the Atlanta Falcons, which set a record for a Bucs rookie quarterback. Glennon completed 20 of 23 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns.
154 – Passing yards per game by San Francisco’s Colin Kaepernick since Week 2, the NFL’s lowest average among qualified quarterbacks, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
1,083 – Receiving yards by Detroit’s Calvin Johnson, which marks the fifth time in his seven-year career he has gone over 1,000. Johnson has enjoyed four consecutive seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards. He surpassed former Lions receiver Herman Moore’s previous team record (four) of at least 1,000 receiving yards in a Lions uniform.
16,005 – Career passing yards by Detroit’s Matthew Stafford, which sets a new team record. Stafford surpassed Hall of Fame quarterback Bobby Layne (15,710) with 362 passing yards against Pittsburgh. Stafford set the new franchise record in 55 career games.
