NHL: Your thoughts on this trade

I'm a Montreal Canadiens' fan, so I am biased here.
Anyway, I think it's time for a complete overhaul of the Habs (for obvious reasons) and maybe time to swing for the fences.

Alexander Ovechkin.

Clearly, he's a guy in need of a change of scenery ... and Montreal fans are clamouring for a superstar.
But to get a superstar, even one who's slumping, you gotta pay.

So, here's the proposed deal:

Montreal sends G Carey Price, D P.K. Subban, C Thomas Plekanic and prospects D Jarred Tinordi, and F Brendan Gallagher.
Washington sends F Alexander Ovechkin, G Thomas Vokoun.

Washington gets out of the Ovechkin cap hit, and gets two emerging stars in Price and Subban ... and a top-6 forward in Plekanic.
Montreal gets a complete overhaul and a superstar who needs a new home.


Montreal then approaches St. Louis about possibly re-acquiring Jaroslav Halak, since it's obvious the Blues might be willing to deal.

There is no way the captials trade Ovey. They will trade everyone else on that team away before they trade him. He is the face of the team even though he is having an off year. Washington is not going to trade a guy like this way, as he sells tickets every single night.

Montreal are fans regardless of who's in that lineup, huge difference.

Also, as a Red Wings fan. How about this trade?

Ovechkin to the Red Wings for a dollar? History has shown that this kind of deal has worked. The Wings did it with Draper and he turned out to be a decent third-fourth liner like Ovechkin would be on the Wings. :smug:

Things leaffan thinks the habs should do. (no troll edition)

- Fire their GM asap unless they have some sort of reason to keep him around. His bizzare player moves and personal decisions are leaving the team in shambles.

- Start scouting for coaches and assess the current coaching situation. Firing their assistant was a dumb idea considering how bad the PP has been since the firing.

Realistically become a seller at the deadline if the playoff picture gets even worse which then would result in trades such as:

- Trading Kostitsyn (UFA). I'm sure a Nashville, LA, St. Louis, Dallas ect ect would possibly pony up their 1st rounder closer to the deadline if they feel they had a legit shot at running deep into the playoffs.

- Trading Hal Gill (UFA). Could result in more draft picks and possibly prospects to a team wanting some defensive depth.

Players like Moen and Desharnais could fetch decent picks or prospects to teams in the playoff hunt as well.

Next year:

Bury Gomez in the minors and just pray he either gets his game back enough that he could possibly because a waiver claim or that he helps out the younger players. It just doesn't make sense for him to be in the NHL with the lack of progress he's making.

Carey Price sign to a 5 or 6 year deal with a 6+ cap hit or go long term for lower cap hit. He needs to be signed. This is one time they can't be penny pinching.

Emelin and Subban need to have 2 or 3 year deals. Subbans cap hit will be higher. Emelin is severly under rated and should stay with the team. The core of Emelin, Subban, and Gorges are pretty good building blocks.

Kaberle or Markov will need to have decisions made for the next season. I really don't see them having a need for both players. At least they would have 2 years left at the end of this season. The canadiens at least have some really good Dmen in the minors. Nathan Beaulieu will replace Markov and/or Kaberle easily hence why I'm thinking trading one of those two players away either in the last year of their deal or the year before would be more benefitial to the team.

Quick side note for funny reasons. They have a dman named Jarred Tinordi in their system. Dude's a beast. 6'7 212. He is the big powerful Dman they want. He's going to be 20 next month and will be either playing for the Canadiens next year or their AHL team. If they trade him away I will laugh.


They don't need to go through a complete rebuild and restructering like their fans seem to think they do. They have the goalie and and they have a solid backend coming up. They just need to get some forwards that will do something and not over pay them. This may take a while but they have enough in place to really turn the culture and play around in a short period of time and not have to go the Edmonton route.

Dave, the Caps could care less about Price with Neuvirth and Holtby. Vokoun is likely not coming back next season regardless of what happens this year, and that was why the Caps were able to trade Varlamov to the Avs for picks this off-season. The team is loaded in goal throughout the minors. You would have to give them something else of worth besides Price as the centerpiece.

And of course, the Caps won't trade Ovechkin right now. I could see it in two or three seasons if the team continues to sputter in the playoffs and dealing Ovechkin would be a more realistic possibility than it is now. But there are a lot of "ifs" in that equation.

If they don't bury that gomez contract next year then I will seriously question the GM because there is some other reason gomez is up and taking the roster spot of a player that could do more.

Kaberle, Mike Fisher and Versteeg all got late first rounders last year so I wouldn't be surprised Kostitsyn can fetch that.

Hal Gill and Moen just feel like guys that will get them 2nd and 3rd rounders which they could turn into a first or moving up to get a player. Gill got a 2nd and a 5th when he was traded from TO to pittsburgh back in 08 and the same thing could happen again to a team like Wash, philly ect ect.
