I wonder if the Panthers will use theirs on Brian Campbell. Sure, he fits the system pretty well, but that $7 million plus could be huge to have back, if not this year then next season.

As for the Caps, I am not sure who they would use this on. Only possibly "bad" contract I see is Brooks Laich at $6.5 million, but he's one of the toughest players, a leader, and one who fills a variety of positions/roles on the team.

I highly doubt they would cut a guy who lead the league last year in PP points and in reality he's only got 4 seasons left at that cap hit so its not that bad for a team with a bunch of rookies on it.

They're already in good position for next season's cap, and they've been a cap floor team for a while now. It might literally break the bank for them to pay Campbell not to play for them, and this doesn't even take into consideration how good he was last season.

One of the reasons Campbell was brought into Florida was because of his cap hit and the need for Florida for raise themselves off the floor. And beside, at least he is scoring goals unlike Gomez.

As a Canadiens' fan, I hated that trade. I couldn't believe they made it. That said ... I never questioned Scott Gomez's effort while a Hab. He worked hard, he just wasn't that guy. He never was. Rangers overpaid him thinking he was close to a franchise #1 centre, he never was. Habs hoped he could be that guy with Brian Gionta. He wasn't that guy ... ever.
But I never questioned his effort ... he just didn't get it done.

As a Habs' fan, I take Gomez at $2M per year in a heartbeat. He just was and never will be the $7.3M cap guy.

I don't watch the Habs which much intensity so it's possible that he changed his mindset with the Habs, but with the Rangers he was just slow, small and soft; this is also a guy who famously couldn't figure out how to get points playing on a line with Jaromir Jagr by the way. He will have to catch on with a truly hopeless team because no one wise will be hiring him for his leadership, body checking, penalty killing or faceoffs and he won't be hired to pass the puck to the type of wingers in the bottom six who could stat-pad his entire career like some have in the past. My educated guess is that Scott Gomez won't play another game in the NHL.

He is 5-foot-11, 200lbs, yeah he is small as fuck.

In the last two years with Montreal he has played 118 games and scored nine goals and 49 points. Only in the 2001-02 season did he have less points then that.

Gomez will probably get another shot at the NHL, but the issue is with who. He isn't a vet you bring in at playoff time to give your team a boost, and his days as a top 6 are long gone. He had talent with him in Montreal in order to score goals. And when you look at his stats, he isn't even a point per game player over the course of his career.

You can't even really trust him in a defence, third line role because over the last four years he has been a minus-25 player. I do think someone will sign him, and probably a team that doesn't need to. Hell I always throw Dallas and Phoenix into the mix since old guys seem to go there and start doing well. And the dumping ground that is Calgary is always a go. But I think with the way the salary cap is going, and the way the league is going, wasting time on him won't be an option. If he does sign, it will be some 2yr, $3-4 million deal.

For the record, here's what I've seen so far from Scotty 'Try Hard' Gomez in one of his 'best' games of last season (because he actually scored a goal in this one) ... knocked over in the neutral zone by a slight touch ... tripped a guy going nowhere ... won a faceoff ... got the jump on a defenceman and was able to throw a blind pass towards the slot which was a relatively unquestionable decision ... some nice work at the red line to get a puck deep under pressure ... three token efforts on defence, one which lead to a great Islanders chance ... reneged on an opportunity to go hard to the net ... lost a faceoff ... got in against the goalie and didn't even trouble him ... He looks every bit the unimaginative, untrustworthy, and not really interested player to me.

Scott Gomez is slated to meet with the San Jose Sharks this weekend as both sides explore whether there's a fit for the veteran forward with the club.

The 33-year-old was bought out by the Montreal Canadiens after clearing waivers on Thursday.

Gomez played 38 games with the Canadiens last season, posting two goals and nine assists.

Prior to his three seasons in Montreal, the Anchorage, Alaska native played for the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils.

Gomez was originally drafted in the first round, 27th overall by the Devils in the 1998 NHL Draft.

So what are you saying? They sign Gomez, they don't stand a chance? What is it with you and Gomez? He kick your dog or something? He didn't demand 7.5 million, Slats offered it to him. Did you want Gomez to tell Slats, no, thanks I am not worth that much? He was never worth 7.5 million but he was worth in the area of 5 to 6 million per. He just didn't fit in Broadway or up there in Montreal. I bet, in the right situation, in a less marketed, more relaxed team like San Jose, I could see him putting up 40 to 50 assists again. Up until 3 years ago, he was close to a point per game player. He won't be the guy that everyone expects to carry the team in SJ. Mostly stuck down on the 3rd line, some PP shifts and it might just suit him. He is only 33, it is not like he is old.
