2013 marked the first-ever year since Billboard began charting Top 40 songs in 1958 that zero black artists made their way to the top of the singles chart.

The top spot on the Hot 100 -- today's version of the singles chart -- was dominated by white acts throughout the past year. Perhaps even more intriguing is the fact that white artists even sat atop the R&B and Hip-Hop Songs chart for 44 out of 52 weeks of 2013. Compare this to ten years ago, when every No. 1 Hot 100 single was performed by an artist of color.

Not so much concerning as it is telling. Black music (hip hop) has gone down hill considerably over the years. Some of the stuff they cone out with now is an embarrassment to the pioneers of hip hop. For the most part (not all), its a bunch of no talent hacks trying to capitalize on mainstream media.

1. No idea who Mackelmore is.
2. The only black artist who had #1 songs in 2012, were Rihanna, Flo Rida, and Bruno Mars(doesn't look like we missed much).They aren't going anywhere, neither is Beyonce or Kanye West. So what if they didn't have a #1 song last year? Those names can easily dominate this year.
3. Why should anyone care what race is getting # 1 songs?

Replacing Miley Cyrus with a random black girl just brings the whole race down. If white artist wanna start being the face of this nonsense and take away some of the "credit"(or blame) from the blacks...

There might not be anyone writing songs for Rihanna if it weren't for Umbrella, which was originally intended for Britney Spears.

P.S.-The fact that these songs aren't written by the artist, but instead black males, is more reason this is a non story.

Decided to listen specifically to Macklemore just for the sake of this thread...I recognized most of the songs. He sounds like a white guy who robbed Pitbulls style on the way to the stage.

Personally Bruno Mars is great and has an amazing voice , Love Rihanna as well , I mock Pitbull but his music is really catchy.
DGAF about Beyonce , Jay Z or Kanye. Is this just a lack of depth ? Not sure any of these put out anything new this year. Or a concerted effort. Looking at the songs at the top almost all of them are "generic white act" featuring production and vocals from a black act. So many of these songs have "color" just not the lead singer.

HipHop sucks plain and simple. It jumped the shark eons ago I can only hope these shitty pop bottles and bust a cap guys die a slow music death and creative acts flourish.
WTF is RnB ?? That died eons ago. RnB music today is some bizarre hybrid of pop and rap. Whitney Houston , Mary J Blige , Early Mariah , Boyz 2 Men etc were probably the last we saw of pure RnB music. Adele (whos white ironically) is probably the best voice around and IMO a clear soul/RnB singer. But shes labeled "pop" as white people dont want to be associated with black genres and blacks will get offended by a white lady being the only voice around.
I dont htink theres an easy answer.

I DO hope however that one of them is people are sick of seeing this ....how the fuck did America let this become a sex symbol.
