Record labels appropriating black music and re-packaging it with white artists is a recurring trend going back to the 1950s. Not asking anybody to care, I am just acknowledging another example of this phenomenon.

Bomani Jones put it a bit more bluntly: "once they find a white person who can do it, they won't need the black person anymore" ...

Correct me if i'm wrong, honest question, but aren't many of these labels either run or owned by blacks?

If the argument is white people are more marketable, I don't buy that. If the top ten list was entirely black ten years ago, I would think white people would have no problems a half generation later with black artists considering with each passing gen people tend not to see color as much as their parents did (and it's not seniors buying or listening to this stuff, we're talking young people).

If the argument is a systematic pattern of racism, I don't buy that either, unless i'm ignorant to who is really running labels.

I think we may be looking at a fluke, but I could be wrong.

Maybe, just maybe, 30 years of "urban" music like hip hop and r&b being extremely popular among white kids has funneled young white musicians towards those genres, since they grew up on them. Of course, immediately blaming the white devil is always easier.

It's a cycle that goes like this ...

1. black people make genre of music
2. young people like the music but old people are fearful it is "aggressive" and "scary"
3. record labels are content making money off black artists but recognize higher earning potential with more family-friendly white artists
4. white artists begin making said music in volume, tacitly supported by record labels
5. genre of music is assimilated into white culture

All of this has happened before, all of this will happen again.

If they write a song and demand that a black artist gets it, no white man in a business suit is gonna trump them. But of course they don't do this. Possibly not , but the genre is and has been so bastardized its hard to tell. When Bobby Brown is your self proclaimed king you got issues.
When I think RnB I think Ottis Redding , Marvin Gaye , James Brown , Stevie Wonder allll the way to Ugly J Blige , Keith Sweat , Boyz 2 Men ..even early Usher. Unless its a straight up love ballad its hard to distinguish anymore especially since moustache curling white people labeled it "RNB" just because they were black regardless of the musical makeup of the song.


Honestly I really thought RNB disappeared because people were finally accepting musical acts for the actual musical genre they are in not the racial one. I was convinced stupid soccer moms , and stay at home dads didn't care anymore , but perhaps a generation of teenage girls twerking on you tube , bringing home darkies and YourDaughtersFuckingCockzilla porns have scared them straight and will only buy Robin Thicke and Miley no matter how much rape and twerk is sung about.

I recall MANY MANY MANY specials around 1999 about what music will look like in the 00s. One thing that many blacks harped on was they would be much much more behind the scenes , writing , producing and creating artists. Which seems to be the case. Blacks certainly dont own the major record labels but they certainly have there own subsidiaries. When they werent busy shooting each other they cornered several markets. Since then alot has changed but if black people are now the middle men does it really matter ? Isnt it an accomplishment to have the white folks dancing a jig and making asses of themselves for your profit ?
Macklemore is unsigned and independent yet hit #1. Not sure how that fits in to this whole scheme.

This, plus the fact that Usher is as big as Robin Thicke while Miley can't even compete with Rihanna or Beyonce, is why I say it's a non-issue. Black song writers have a say on who gets their songs, and even if they didn't, nothing indicates that a white man in a business suit is gonna hand a song to Miley Cyrus instead of Rihanna solely based on race.

Suggesting that white soccer moms view Beiber(a 13 year old dweeb from Canada) differently from R.Kelly(a man charged with peeing on a underaged girl), and Miley(a 14 year old harmless Disney star) differently from Ciara(a grown woman who debuted with sex related songs) because of race is absurd.
