Does that not say in terms of "games played"? Michigan vs. Notre Dame in games played = 39. I definitely view Stanford, USC, Purdue and Navy as ND's top rivals, but in terms of games played, ND and Pitt are right up there. Michigan State is slightly behind them, but again in terms of games played those are listed as ND's top rivals.

I never said the others weren't rivalry games, I just said in terms of numbers, those were the top 4.

Using total number of games played against each other to determine a "rival" with two schools as old and as close as Pitt and Notre Dame is simple minded and flat out retarded.

For two teams that have played so much they have virtually no games of siginigicance. No real memorable games of any meaning, and the most memorable thing about games from recent memory is Tyler Palko cussing on national TV after a Pitt win over ND. There's no hatred between the schools, no trophy, no real "history" other than that they have played a lot.

Pitt football games are a foot note in terms of Notre Dame "rivalries". No one I have ever talked to gets geared up for Pitt-ND games in any sense of a "rivalry". I would guess that people think Notre Dame-Miami is more of a rivalry than ND-Pitt, and ND-Miami hasn't played regularly for many years now. If ND dropped Pitt from their schedule, no one would bemoan the fact. The only thing I can even recall from an ND-Pitt game is Darnell Dickerson fumbling away a TD 3 times on one play...

A 62-yard drive had taken Pitt to the Notre Dame 9. Dickerson, as good on the option for pitches or keeps as is Rice, decided to keep on this touchdown bid. He got clear and seemed to have an easy Pitt score for the lead.

But just as he reached the goal line he lost the football. It was raining lightly by then. All alone, Dickerson fell into the end zone trying to regain possession. He batted, squeezed, slapped and even butted the football. But in a final dive, he only managed to fall on and thereby squirt the ball out from under himself.

By this time Notre Dame players were all around and a few of them fell on it to prevent the score.

Already have pre-made rivalries like Pitt and BC. You can renew a rivalry with Miami permanently (every two years, maybe). You can schedule your OOC to have Michigan, Michigan State, USC, and the service academies rotate so you maintain those rivalries that should continue to be important to Notre Dame football (schedule a service academy every year, along with one of the other rivals and then fill the remaining OOC with cupcakes).

I think in football, it makes sense. I think in basketball it makes sense. I think academically it makes sense. I think geographically, considering Notre Dame's strong East Coast following, it makes sense.
