That game was over quickly though. The biggest thing holding Thomas back this year IMO is the total suck that is the Pac 12 and the fact that he won't have to post after HT much in conference play.

There isn't a clear Heisman candidate any year this early. Remember when Luck was destined to win it last year? How about Barkley being the runaway favorite to win it this year?

Picking a player to start a bandwagon for now is just destined to jinx him.

Along that same line of thinking though the RG3 bandwagon got fired up after the TCU game which I'm pretty sure was the first game of the 2011 season if not one of the first.

If Te'o has a huge game against USC that could be enough to push him over the top. That picture and the stories about his girlfriend and grandmother are the kind of indelible narratives that sappy sports writers gobble up.

Bingo. I'm not sure he can continue at this pace, but ending the season with 5 INTs/5 Fumble Recoveries or more and continue to be the heart and soul of the team would, IMO, at least get him an invite to New York. And if NDs defense continues to dominate and goes undefeated (unlikely), he has just as good a shot as anyone. And if anybody deserves it, it has to be Te'o /nohomer.

Just a difference of philosophy for most of those teams. For instance, LSU uses 4 different running backs who all rushed for more than 500 yards last season. You'd have to divide the trophy in quadrants to find a legit candidate on that offense.

Defense and depth are the mark of Bama/LSU/Georgia/etc. It's not about one star individual. D'Anthony Thomas, EJ Manuel and Marcus Lattimore are the only potential "star" offensive players to be found out of that list of teams. Lattimore is still recovering from his injury, DAT has not yet faced a marquee opponent, and the jury is still out on Manuel.
 
According to voters at the mothership, Te'o is 8th behind Geno, EJ Manuel, Collin Klein, DeAnthony Thomas (meh), Braxton Miller (lol), Aaron Murray (lol), Matt Barkley (lol)
