Old School Wrestling Angle: Archie "The Stomper" Gouldie vs Bad News Allen - Stampede
This is one of the most infamous angles in wrestling history. Bad News Allen turns on Archie "The Stomper" Gouldie and attacks his son Jeff. The angle is tame by today's standards, but was deemed so violent by the athletic commission, that they suspended Stu Hart's promotional license.
LOL @ Bad News: I broke his neck! I crippled him! I hope that son of a gun dies!
Great stuff.
Gouldie then cuts one of the most famous promos in wrestling history. Keep in mind, "The Stomper" almost never did promos, and was almost always a savage heel. When he did do promos, he usually just yelled and screamed.
The whole deal was so convincing at the time, that not only did they fool the athletic commission, but the announcer, Ed Whalen, quit in protest of how violent the whole thing was to him. Unreal.
Listen carefully to the narrator's voice in the begging...MMA fans will recognize him:

Next up is the "go home" promos by Goudie & Bad News. When they talk about the building being shut down, they are shooting. Stu Hart had to scramble and book the match on an indian resevation. Talk about money promos. Stomper justifying the higher ticket prices is priceless:

Here is the match....they worked ultra stiff for the time:

The lesson here, is you can draw big money in wrestling by keeping things simple. This angle seems awfully tame, but thats because the WWE pushes the envelope so often, and hotshots everything every week, so nothing has impact anymore.
This storyline worked, because they didnt repeat it every week. Bad News injured Stomper's kid, so Stomper's motivation was clear. The angle came off so believeable, because they kept stuff like this to a minimum. And the promos, especially The Stomper's, were top notch and made people want to see the match.
So simple, yet so effective. Less is more.
