COLT MCCOY IS THE BILLS STARTING QB

This week the Patriots travel to Orchard Park, New York to battle the division rival Bills in the early game of week one's Monday Night Football double header. Both teams will be looking to build momentum for the season as well as seeing how their new pieces work together in their first meaningful game.

Players to Watch
For Buffalo all eyes will be on quarterback Colt McCoy, who comes into the season as a starter for the first time in his career. If McCoy can play smart, mistake free football the Bills should be able to cover up his deficiencies with a decent running game and a solid defense. Sammy Watkins will be his go to guy for the most part. On defense the Bills have stars everywhere. Defensive tackle Marcell Dareus is one of the best in the league as is defensive end Mario Williams. At linebacker Nigel Bradham and Kiko Alonso are two of the best young outside linebackers in the league.

Tale of the Tape
N/A in Week One

Injury Report
NE - None
BUF - HB Bryce Brown, RT Seantrel Henderson, RE Wallace Gilberry, SS Aaron Williams

Outlook
The Bills come into the 2015 season with a new look on offense. Quarterback Kyle Orton is now Big Ben’s backup in Pittsburgh. His departure forced the Bills to think about just how much confidence they had in E.J. Manuel to lead the team. That answer was apparently not very much as the team elected to sign Colt McCoy and Mark Sanchez in the offseason. McCoy won a heated battle in the preseason and will be the starter for now.

Elsewhere on the offensive side of the ball the Bills have shaken things up in the backfield with C.J. Spiller out in Minnesota. Fred Jackson and Daniel Thomas are likely to get the bulk of the work while Bryce Brown recovers from an injury.

Buffalo’s biggest addition on the offensive side of the ball is veteran wide receiver Pierre Garcon. Garcon will start aside from Sammy Watkins, who caught 63 passes for 805 yards and 4 touchdowns as a rookie. Former Patriot Benjamin Watson will start at tight end.

The Bills have a new look on the offensive line with left tackle Cordy Glenn the only returning starter from 2014.

On defense the Bills return all but one of their starting front seven from 2013 with Nate Irving, formerly of the Broncos, replacing Brandon Spikes who returned to the Patriots.

Corey Graham and Stephon Gilmore are the starting cornerbacks and there’s a big drop off after that. The Patriots should have a big advantage in their three and four receiver sets. Starting safety Aaron Williams is out with a pulled groin. Darian Stewart, who came over from Baltimore, and rookie Gant Tucker are the starting safeties.

Game Prediction
If the Patriots offensive line can keep Tom Brady upright he should have no trouble picking apart the Bills pass defense. New England’s defense shouldn’t have much trouble with Colt McCoy. Expect the Patriots to win comfortably.

Patriots stampede Bills

The Patriots were victorious in their week one contest in Buffalo. New England only put up 24 points in the win but they looked far more dominant than the 24-3 final score would indicate.

Tom Brady threw a pair of touchdowns to tight end Rob Gronkowski, who hauled in a total of 5 passes for 61 yards.

The Pats rolled up 324 yards of total offense while holding the Bills to just 151. Bills QB Colt McCoy was injured early in the contest leading to E.J. Manuel stepping in. Manuel briefly ignited the stagnant Bills offense with his legs but it was far from enough.

“It’s always good to start off the season with a win. We’re going to go back to work and get ready for Dallas.” Bill Belichick said after the win.

If there was one are of concern for the Patriots it was the run game. New England managed just 88 yards on the ground with Stevan Ridley’s 44 yards leading the way. LeGarrette Blount picked up 39 yards in the win.

“We need to make some improvements in the run game, no question about that.” Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniel acknowledged in the post game press conference.

The Patriots will play host to the Dallas Cowboys in week two.

DEZ BRYANT AND THE COWBOYS COME TO TOWN LOOKING TO GET TO 2-0

This week the Patriots will host the Dallas Cowboys in a 1:00 game at Gillette. The Cowboys defeated the Jets 21-10 in Dallas last week.

Players to Watch
Dallas lost HB DeMarco Murray to the Cardinals via free agency and have replaced him with rookie Vintize Rosemond out of Florida State. The Cowboys are led by QB Tony Romo and superstar WR Dez Bryant on offense. Romo also has TE Jason Witten and WR Michael Crabtree to rely on. The Dallas offensive line is a good one led by LT Tyron Smith. On defense Safety Barry Church is the leader. With MLB Sean Lee out the Cowboys will have to rely on LB Brandon Marshall to make key tackles in the running game.

Outlook
Dallas leans heavily on their passing game with Murray out of the picture. The Patriots will have to put pressure on Romo and not allow him to sit in the pocket and find open receivers.

New England will have to try to contain Dez Bryant and stop him from making big plays.

Dallas’ defensive front seven is banged up and the Patriots need to take advantage of that by running the ball. If they are able to that will help them in the passing game.

Game Prediction
Whichever quarterback plays better should win this one. It should be a close game that comes down to a few big plays.

Pats struggle, top Cowboys

Tom Brady threw four interceptions. Let me repeat that. Tom Brady threw four interceptions earlier today as the Patriots played host to the Cowboys.

Brady’s fourth pick of the day went to Dallas corner Antoine Cason, who returned it 67 yards for a score to put the Cowboys on top 17-13. Gostkowski kicked a 26yard field goal early in the fourth to make it 17-16 Dallas.

With just over a minute left to play Brady and the Pats offense got the ball back at their own 20. On third and ten Brady connected with LaFell for 15 yards and a first down at the Dallas 39. After an incompletion Brady found rookie Treyvon Ford for 14 yards to the Dallas 25. From there it was 3 Ridley runs up the middle and a game-winning 26 yard field goal by Gostkowski.

“Pretty upset with myself really. I let the team down today. Luckily the defense bailed us out and Stephen was able to win the game for us.” Tom Brady replied when asked about his performance in the game.

Brady hasn’t thrown four interceptions in a game since September 25th, 2011 in a loss to the Bills.

New England found some early success running the ball but seemed to go away from it in the second half.

Dallas’ offensive line was as advertised, holding the Patriots to just 2 sacks and keeping Romo upright and clean for the majority of the game.

New England will play host to Peyton Manning and the Broncos next week on Sunday Night Football.

PEYTON MANNING ONCE AGAIN COMES TO TOWN

This week the Patriots will battle the Broncos and Peyton manning on Sunday Night Football on NBC. The Broncos are 1-1 and come in off a 30-6 beatdown of the Chiefs.

Players to Watch
For Denver it’s all about Peyton Manning. He’ll be looking to hook up with WR Demaryius Thomas and TE Julius Thomas. Absent is WR Wes Welker, who has joined the Vikings. WR Emmanuel Sanders gives the Broncos a deep threat in the passing game. HBs C.J. Anderson and Montee Ball give the Broncos a solid 1-2 punch in the backfield. Denver’s defense is led by OLB Von Miller, CB Chris Harris Jr and DE Demarcus Ware.

Outlook
New England could have trouble with Denver’s pass rush. If Tom Brady plays as poorly as he did last week the Pats will be in trouble. New England should really look to run the ball this week as the Broncos have had some trouble stopping it.

The Patriots will have to work hard to slow down the passing attack of the Broncos. Manning is still one of the best QBs in the league and he has plenty of weapons.

Game Prediction
Denver might have too much firepower on offense and the Pats might not be able to keep Brady upright against their ferocious pass rush. Look for Denver to win a close one.

Pats top Broncos in close one, remain unbeaten

The Patriots held the Broncos offense to just seven points en route to a 21-14 win last night at Gillette. Brady threw a pick six to Broncos linebacker Lamin Barrow that accounted for the Broncos other seven points. New England scored all their points on Tom Brady TD passes. Brady connected with Gronkowski, Edelman and LaFell.

Brady’s two interceptions gives him six in the past two games.

New England had their best game of the season on the ground with Ridley running for 75 yards and Blount picking up 82.

“It’s very important. We need to be balanced and it all starts with the running game.” Julian Edelman answered when asked how important it was for Blount and Ridley to get going.

The Pats scored first on a Brady to Edelman pass from five yards out in the first quarter.

Barrow scored the 57 yard pick six early in the second to knot it up.

Brady answered with an 8 yard TD pass to LaFell.

Manning came right back, hitting TE Julian Thomas for a 42 yard score.

Gronkowski hauled in a 6 yard scoring pass just before halftime and that turned out to be the game winner as the teams shut each other out in the second half.

New England will host the Eagles next sunday

MATT BARKLEY BRINGS HIS 3-0 EAGLES TO GILLETTE

The Patriots will host the 3-0 Eagles as two of the last three undefeated teams do battle. Kickoff is set for 1:00PM.

Players to Watch
It’s no secret that the Eagles will be leaning on HB LeSean McCoy. McCoy has 294 yards and 4 touchdowns on 50 carries so far this season. Behind McCoy is the always dangerous Darren Sproles. At receiver the Eagles feature Jeremy Maclin and Jordan Matthews with Riley Cooper as their third option. TE Zach Ertz is also a dangerous option.

Defensively the Eagles are led by RE Fletcher Cox, MLB Mychal Kendricks and LOLB Connor Barwin.

Pats pull away in the 4th to top Eagles

The Eagles ground game couldn’t be stopped. LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles combined for 188 yards rushing and helped the Eagles dominate time of possession in the first half. Phily rode their runners on the opening drive which they capped with a 39 yard Cody Parkey field goal. The drive chewed up over half of the first quarter. New England was able to answer quickly on a drive that saw Tom Brady hook up with Julian Edelman for an 11 yard touchdown.

The second quarter was more of the same with the Eagles pounding the football and the Patriots struggling to slow them down. Matt Barkley mixed in short to intermediate passes and kept the Eagles moving the ball. They added ten points in the second, coming on a 3 yard McCoy run and a 50 yard Parkey field goal just before halftime. Philadelphia led 13-7 at the break.

New England opened the second half with a long drive that concluded with Brady’s second passing touchdown, this time to Aaron Dobson, who scored from 14 yards out. McCoy answered with a 68 yard touchdown run on the Eagles next possession. Philly went for 2 but the pass was broken up by Jamie Collins, giving the Eagles a 19-14 lead.

The Patriots put together a long drive early in the fourth and capitalized when LeGarrette Blount hopped over a crowd of defenders and into the endzone. Brady hit Rob Gronkowski for the two point conversion that put the Pats up 22-19.

Cody Parkey tied it back up on the next possession, hitting a 35 yarder.

On their own 27 yard line Brady hit Dobson on a flag route. Dobson shook of tackle attempts by safety Marcus Gilchrist and corner Nolan Carroll before going the distance for six. The kick put New England on top 29-22.

Safety Duron Harmon essentially sealed the game when he picked off a Barkley pass that was intended for WR Riley Cooper. Vince Wilfork and Rob Ninkovich supplied pressure on Barkley and he was forced the throw before he was ready.

Brady led his troops up the field and capped off the game with a 5 yard scramble TD to make the final score 36-22 Patriots.

“Well, I won’t say it was pretty but it put six on the board and at the end of the day that’s all that matters.” Julian Edelman replied with a laugh when asked about Brady’s run. The rushing TD was Brady’s 15th of his career and first since the 2012 season.

The Patriots are off next week. They will travel to face the New York Giants on Monday Night Football in two weeks.
