Do you think the Reds pick up the team option after a successful surgery or do you think they'll let him go and someone will get a cheap Ryan Madson next year? (2nd season is $11MM or $2.5MM buyout). He's guaranteed $8.5MM to never throw a pitch for the Reds.

It's a mutual option, and there is virtually no chance the Reds pick up their end of it now. Madson will likely never throw a pitch for the Reds.

Madson should fire Boras. He could have gotten a big contract from the Phillies, but Boras played hardball. Madson ends up with the Reds on a one year deal, which only $6MM is payable now (the rest is deferred), and he won't even see the option year because the Reds will almost certainly buy him out. And nobody is going to give Madson a long term, big money deal next year coming off TJ.

On the wrong side of 30 and at least two years away from a potential big money deal, Boras probably cost Madson roughly $30-$35MM.

Reds cut two veteran left handed relievers today who were in camp on minor league deals - Clay Zavada & Ron Mahay.
