Patriots sign Kellen Winslow (post 25)

RENTON, Wash. -- Kellen Winslow was acquired by the Seattle Seahawks in the hopes that along with Zach Miller the duo could become a formidable set of tight ends who could add another element to the Seahawks offense.

Those plans drastically changed on Saturday when Winslow was released by the team, keeping true to the Seahawks' past form of tinkering with their roster even after all training camp cuts are made.

A team spokesman confirmed Winslow's release shortly after it was first reported by ESPN.com. Winslow was scheduled to make $3.3 million in base salary in 2012, following his trade from Tampa Bay to Seattle in May.

Seattle moved quickly to fill Winslow's spot by agreeing to terms with former Cleveland tight end Evan Moore, who was released by the Browns on Friday. Moore caught 34 passes for 324 yards and four touchdowns a season ago for Cleveland. Cutting Winslow briefly left Seattle with just Miller and Anthony McCoy on the active roster, but there is likely to be more shuffling before the Seahawks start preparations for the regular season opener at Arizona on Sept. 9.

The Seahawks gave up a conditional draft pick to the Buccaneers to get Winslow, who said it became clear he didn't fit into the plans of new Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano. Even with knee problems in the past, he was expected to be a significant contributor to the Seahawks offense.

"I knew when Raheem (Morris) left and coach Schiano came in I was kind of skeptical how the fit was going to be, how the team was going to be run," Winslow said during training camp. "So it does motivate me. But I just want to be an elite tight end. My thing is catching the ball. I want to be the top guy at that."

Winslow didn't have much impact during preseason games, finishing with just three catches for 34 yards and a touchdown. His practice time was also closely monitored as Seattle tried to get Winslow to the regular season without putting additional stress on his knee.

The Seahawks believed that schematically they could create mismatches using Winslow and Miller lined up against slower linebackers or smaller safeties. Miller signed with the Seahawks before the 2011 season, but was stuck in mostly a blocking situation during his first season and never was much of a receiving threat.

"I've always had a blocking tight end and Zach is both," Winslow said during camp. "We'll be even more dangerous."

so to be clear, its ok for a team to cut a player who will now lose his income, even though the team signed or acquired a contract saying they will pay him the terms of the contract.

Brian price was so out of shape he wasn't even finishing practices. They couldn't wait for him. I thought they would have PUP listed him. But they just said gtfo instead.

Glad we have Briscoe. He and Hankerson will get plenty of time on the field, as the Redskins receivers have lacked size for some years. Some of us call them the Smurfs. From what I've seen, I don't get why he was released.

IMO, all NFL contracts should be fully guaranteed. No pro athletes risk more than NFL players ... and no league makes more money than the NFL.

Baseball ain't America's pastime ... the NFL is.

Hell, Vegas should just guarantee the contracts.

The New England Patriots love looking for bargain bin tight ends.

Apparently it is not enough that the Patriots have two of the best in the business at the position in Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, but New England officials have sifted through their share of potential backups in recent months. Visanthe Shiancoe is the third tight end. The Pats employed former Titan Bo Scaife for about 10 days in the off-season, and they visited with Dallas Clark in the off-season as well.

But the latest tight end to get a look from the Pats, according to ESPN.com, is Kellen Winslow, Jr., who was released on Saturday by the Seattle Seahawks.

Winslow has been very well traveled in his NFL career since being a first-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2004. He also spent time with the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Rumor was our head coach, Greg Shiano, was rubbed the wrong way by Briscoe not showing up for any of the voluntary workouts. There were also reports that he failed the conditioning test when he reported to camp but I dont see that as a reason for being released when there were supposedly several players who failed the test.

He definitely can be a productive TE, he had about 750 yards last season, with only 2 TDs, in a horrible season from Freeman. That said he never practiced. They made it so he can pretty much rest up throughout the week because of his knees. We all know Bill not having any of that shit if he goes to NE. If he does land in NE that will be a fucking nightmare with them 3 on the field at any given time. Maybe the Cowboys will have a look at him.
