Patriots sign Kellen Winslow (post 25)

Pats signed late Rams roster cut Michael Hoomanawanui, who had just been signed to the Redskins practice squad hours earlier. Looks like Winslow won't end up in NE.

He failed his physical with the Patriots. Probably a big reason Seattle let him go as well, maybe?

Rumor was our head coach, Greg Shiano, was rubbed the wrong way by Briscoe not showing up for any of the voluntary workouts. There were also reports that he failed the conditioning test when he reported to camp but I dont see that as a reason for being released when there were supposedly several players who failed the test.


He definitely can be a productive TE, he had about 750 yards last season, with only 2 TDs, in a horrible season from Freeman. That said he never practiced. They made it so he can pretty much rest up throughout the week because of his knees. We all know Bill not having any of that shit if he goes to NE. If he does land in NE that will be a fucking nightmare with them 3 on the field at any given time. Maybe the Cowboys will have a look at him.

Yeah, just have them do a conditioning test like the Redskins did for Fat Albert :yao:

ree-agent tight end Kellen Winslow did not fail his physical with the New England Patriots, as has been reported, according to two league sources. The Patriots were aware of the questions about his knees, but they did not fail him on his physical.

Winslow was released by the Seahawks last Saturday. The team originally acquired him in a trade with Tampa Bay in May.

Winslow has a base salary of $3.3 million for the 2012 season, which would have been guaranteed if he was on the roster for the season opener.

The Patriots did make moves at tight end on Wednesday, signing veteran free agent Michael Hoomanawanui and placing Visanthe Shiancoe on injured reserve.

The Patriots also have Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez and Daniel Fells filling tight end spots on the roster, so the interest in Winslow may have fallen into the "in case of emergency" category.

Winslow, 29, has caught 437 passes for 4,836 yards and 23 touchdowns in seven seasons and made the Pro Bowl while with the Browns in 2007. He caught 75 passes for 763 yards and two scores last season.

Hoomanawanui, who was released by the Rams on Sunday, had 20 catches in two seasons with the St. Louis.

It took less than 48 hours for the New England Patriots to replace injured tight end Aaron Hernandez. According to sources, the Patriots have agreed to a one-year contract with former Pro Bowl tight end Kellen Winslow Jr.

Winslow's agent tweeted congratulations to Winslow later Tuesday morning, although no official confirmation has come from the team yet.

The tweet from Denise White, CEO of EAG Sports Management, read: "Congrats to our client @KellenWinslowJr for signing with the Patriots!!!"

It is no surprise the Patriots had interest in Winslow. New England brought him in for a visit two weeks ago and kept Winslow on the team's short list.

Hernandez suffered a right ankle injury in Sunday's loss to the Arizona Cardinals and is expected to miss at least a month, sources told ESPN on Monday.

Winslow brings many of the same skills to the table. He's an athletic tight end with good hands. This also allows New England to continue to run its vaunted two-tight end sets, with Winslow projected to team up with Pro Bowl tight end Rob Gronkowski.

Winslow caught 75 passes for 763 yards and two touchdowns last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He's averaged 73 receptions for 792.3 yards the past three seasons.

IMO, all NFL contracts should be fully guaranteed. No pro athletes risk more than NFL players ... and no league makes more money than the NFL.

Baseball ain't America's pastime ... the NFL is.

Hell, Vegas should just guarantee the contracts.

Its the other way around, NBA and MLB contracts should not be guaranteed. Guaranteed contracts are a cancer in the NBA where only about half the teams make a profit, and teams trade away assets just to take a bad contract off the books.
