I would agree with Youk.

FM has more, I would call it "width", with all of the countries and leagues, that is to be expected. But OOTP has more depth, but also has fewer leagues so they can spend more time on it. This is a dumb conversation either way, because they are both the two best sports games every year.

It's all a matter of taste. I think both games are pretty perfect in what they offer you as a virtual sports god.

I think one aspect of FM that separated it from OOTP was the 3D match engine. While it will probably take Heinsohn and his boys a few years, I'm really excited to see what their final 3D games look like.

And while the base FM game is probably deeper (depending on how many leagues you make playable), the historical mode of OOTP spans over 150 years.

It's not just the greats included in that game mode either. The database has everyone that made an MLB appearance from the 1870s on with a complete scouting report and varied, but realistic, career trajectory.

It's really simple, you'll be rolling in no time. I'd say start in GM only mode so you can focus on the roster and not have to worry about day-to-day stuff.

The one thing I always tell people no matter how long they've been playing is to go to the financial options and remove the cash limit.

Exactly what Glen said. I recommend starting small with it and delegating big activities (minor league promotions, lineups, etc.) to your minor league managers. I also delegate the major league lineups to my manager. If you do this, check out the roster preferences that your manager has. Some will prefer players with speed over power, OBP over AVG, etc. This will determine who they start and in which order. (In commissioner mode you can change your manager's preferences in order to tailor it to what you want)

In terms of strategies, the OOTP forum is great for them. Once you get into it more you can change up how you play. Some people prefer to play "stats-only", which means that you base your moves only off of scouting reports and statistics to make it tougher.

In the end, I've played for years and I learn something new about the game every day that I play it.

Yea, once you really get into the game, feeder leagues are great. When I was doing a stats-only game I would have a college feeder league where I could see their college stats and judge my draft picks off that. After about 3 seasons it was set-up (since you need to have 3 years in college to be drafted) pretty nicely.

I also turned off high school draftees for that.

Ok, so I'm going to try and get into this. I've tried several different OOTPs in the past but never could quite get sucked in.

Glen, is there like a place to get this megapack like in FM?

You can very easily DL and install the "All-in-One" mod from the homepage of the game by clicking the Add-Ons Central button. A whole bunch of logos/jerseys/player faces/etc can be found there.

May have to break down and give this a try.....more of a guy who likes to play the games than sim based games, but Glen's review has sucked me in.....you guys raving about it isn't helping me resist either

I'm curious how many of us picked this up and would be interested in a league? The nice part about it being a simulation is that you really don't need to fill the entire league.

Beyond that, I know that you can upload all of the information in the game onto a web page. This would let others without the game be able to participate in a league. Between the members we have here and advertising on the OOTP boards, we could have a solid amount of people.
