Pettite wasnt a guy that had the best stats but the dude played hard all the time and worked through many games with bad stuff only allowing a few runs giving the yankees a chance to win. When the postseason came he was clutch.

The postseason wins are what catches everyone but still he was a very good lefthanded pitcher. I think when he said best number 3 starter, i dont think there has been another pitcher that has been a number 3 starter for there whole careers that had this many wins.

Also do you guys even know how many players took HGH or steriods that we dont even know. As someone who works for the Mets ive seen things you guys wont even believe.

Well not everyone can be the number 3 starter for the best offensive club in baseball for nearly their whole career.

Wins are a shitty stat. How bout his lifetime 3.88 ERA?

I gotta agree wins mean pretty much nothing especial playing for a team like the Yankees.

Now, all we have is CC and Hughes then Burnett, Nova and Mitre + all the other guys we signed to minor league deals. We would be so screwed if CC opted out of his contract after this year.

I feel as tho the Yankees are in the time where they are having the changing of the guard. Where guys like Jeter, Posada and Mo are all coming into their final years and not knowing when they want to retire or should retire.

As a Red Sox fan I'm certainly happy to see him retire. It was never easy for any team to beat him, especially in October. For the Yankee's, this leaves a huge hole in the rotation which certainly expected him back(for some reason I don't feel it would have happened this way if George was still calling the shots). Not to mention how valuable he was in terms of bringing a lot of experience to any pitchers on the staff, especially playoff experience. He used to intimidate me on TV the way he peered his eyes over his glove as he started his windup. And he certainly gets a pass in my book for coming clean on the spot. I'm sure others on the list would have as well if they did the same. He was always a great pitcher IMO, a true Yankee regardless of his stint in Houston, and will be tough to replace.

Much love for Pettitte. As a childhood left-handed pitcher that was raised a Yankee fan (sigh), he was one of my favorite players growing up. Good to see him retire after a solid season last year.

Exactly. Smoltz was #3 because of the 2 other elite guys in his rotation, if he went to the Orioles in the mid 90s he would've been their #1 starter. Pettitte just so happened to be #3 for the majority of his career but it shouldn't be classified as such because it's ungodly retarded.

Yeah totally. It's such a team-dependent distinction to begin with, and has no bearing on your actual worth as a pitcher. Besides all that, like you say, who the fuck cares? It's like coming up with the best 3rd option in NBA history. Obviously it's going to be someone from a stacked team like the 80s Celtics or 80s Lakers... because if say, Kevin McHale or James Worthy were on a shitty team, they'd have been the #1 scorer.

Anyway, there's no way Pettitte should be in the HOF, IMO. 3.88 ERA (including nine seasons over 4) + overrated Yankee factor.
