[ALL] Pick Atlas' new gaming television...

First off, I put this in the arcade b/c I will mostly use this TV for gaming and maybe some blu ray duty... I also put it here so the LR tards, who have this forum on ignore, dont come in here and give me their opinion, no matter how much I dont want it (rams)...

Anyways, my 61'' Samsung DLP TV died earlier today and needs to be replaced (RIP)... It lived for close to 6 years, so Im not too sad aboot it... So, I want VSN's two cents on the subject, and since I cant decide b/t an LED and a plasma, I'll let the poll decide...

I have a 50" Panasonic Viera and it's great, and they are going to be quite a bit cheaper than LEDs. LEDs are pretty nice as well. I'm just not a big fan of LCD.

im gonna buy it through amazon, unless BB price matches, which i doubt... i have my eye on the 64'' 8000 series Sammy...

i should have also stated that it is also gonna be used sparingly for cable duty (mostly games), and it will be going in a fairly dark room...

Viera's are the creme de la creme of plasmas

Yeah that Viera puts out one damn good image. I have a 47" LCD in my bedroom. While it's good, I just don't find it to have quite as good of a picture as the plasma. The thing I really don't like about the LCD is that bastard gets hot after awhile and can really heat a room up.

If money isn't a concern, I'd say LED. If you're looking for the best bang for your buck, I'd say plasma.

If you get a plasma make sure it has a antiglare screen. Ive made the mistake of getting a really glossy LG and it just sucks having to watch in darkness almost all the time.

1. If youre going LED make sure its a full array not edge lit.
2. Is 3D important ?
3. What size screen , and what price range ?


Plasmas
+ By far the best picture. Period. Even mid line plasmas blow away top end LEDs in overall PQ.
No input lag.
Much better viewing angles.
By far the best bang for your buck. Plasmas are 25% less on average for equivalent screen sizes.

They are hot and heavy. These things give off a shit ton of heat and use sometimes double the electricity.
Image Retention. If you're playing or watching something with a HUD or constant logo the image ghost has a way of staying on there after youre done. Most sets handle this well and it goes away in a few minutes but some low end sets take 15-30 minutes which is ridiculous.



LEDLCD-
+ Bright as fuck. Great displays for well lit rooms as most feature matte screens to further help on fighting ambient light.

Light and use very little electricity in comparison to Plasma or DLP.

Some feel its artificial but there is a unique sharpness and color pop to LEDs. Again not entirely an accurate picture but pleasing to the eye for many.

No concern over burn in , image retention . or leaving it on all day with a dark penis on white girl stomach ruining your set.

You're paying a premium at this point.

Input lag for gaming. Some sets are really really bad. Once you've narrowed down choices look up the model number + input lag to see what people say.

Some sets suffer from clouding, and flashlighting. Ill elaborate or you can google.

Black levels just arent as good as Plasma. Its not just a random stat its arguably the most important part of PQ.


Anyways to to be honest Ive kind of hit a wall and may be waiting myself.
I came () this close to getting the 70" sharp for 1850$ but the lack of 3D was a deal breaker. (Im a fan).
Theres some good prices going on with Samsung and Panasonic plasmas but both are marred with quality control issues at the moment.
Some of the sets (both plasma and led)I had my eye on also had super glassy screens so reflections may be a bitch. I dont wanna watch a game and have to see myself scratching my nuts in a for half the game.

OLED is still 3 years away from being both affordable and hopefully free of first gen issues.

This sucks to hear...but dont go by what you see at BB. I cant emphasize that enough. There signals are so shitty its not even funny. The brightness of the rooms mask the PQ differences between the two types.Try other local places where they may be willing to change a channel or source. I thought the 70" sharp looked horrific...I walked into PC richard where they had a soccer game playing and almost walked out with the set.

Have a 3 or 4 year old Sharp Aquos (plasma) ... "Only" 40 inches but it gets the jerb done.

65" Panasonics have all been on sale the ST30 for 1700 recently but the green tint scares me. VT30 for 23-2400 which is a damn gorgeous picture.

My DLP is a Samsung but the theres some horror stories on there sets this year. Peeling , Cracking , Brightness pops etc.

If you dont care about 3d the 70" Sharp is a no brainer. Amazing picture and size for under 2 gs. Theres a thread on AVS people love the set.


Let me know what you narrow down or get impressions on.
Im trying to avoid going over 2k but looking at 60-65"
