LOL at this. Shawn Kemp dunked on everyone in his prime. I don't think it reflects poorly on Pippen to get dunked over by a superstar. Whats worse...getting dunked on by Kemp, or getting stuffed by Manu Ginobelli? Its not even close.

In the context of an actual NBA discussion both are 100% irrelevant and stupid.

I wasn't posting them to prove a point about either player, just showing how handpicked YouTube highlights are kind of a bad way to prove one player would dominate another in a match-up. Then again it's VSN and it's NBA discussion...

Again, we aren't talking about career accolades. We're talking about a matchup in a game.

Of course Pippen is more accomplished. We get it. Durant is not top 100, but he's also been in the league 4 years as is 23 years old. That's irrelevant to the entire discussion.

I'm not talking about accolades bro. I'm talking about talent. Durant is a nice scorer, Pippen is one of the best defensive players ever.

Accolades, accomplishments and team accomplishments is a bad way to try and break down a 1 on 1 matchup discussion, no? Guess I'm way off base or I actually read ralaw's original post.

My beef is the idea that "OMGZ 1990s! Pippen would destroy him and even Michael Cooper would destroy him!".

Durant is a hell of a ballplayer, let's actually try and have a decent NBA discussion on this board without getting to the "LULZ NBA SUCKS THESE DAYS" posts.

Durant is a match-up nightmare for a lot of players in the league today. He's very tough to defend and despite Scottie being the best perimeter defender ever, I still think Durant would be able to give him some trouble from the outside. Durant doesn't have a post game these days, so he wouldn't be all that effective in that respect but if Durant was hitting outside shots he'd be able to put up some numbers on Pippen.

Likewise, Durant would be a good match-up defensively for Pippen because of his athleticism and freakishly long arm.

All told, I think Pippen was the better all around player and wins the match-up, I just don't think it's the shutdown/destruction you guys described. That's not fair to how good Kevin Durant is at this stage of his NBA career.

Well I posted some statistics that show him at a similar numbers to Scottie Pippen defensively at the same age and his 16.1 Win Shares in 2010 mean he had a more valuable season at age 22 then Scottie Pippen ever had. But yeah...

For the record since I'm sure by trying to have a discourse people will think I hate Scottie or didn't watch them growing up or something (hopefully I get more YouTube highlights). Scottie is probably my favorite player of all-time, liked him better than Jordan growing up.

I guess I see teh discussion of the 90's as relevant to the question since Pippen's argument is going to revolve around him playing in a "tougher" era and being viewed as maybe the bets perimeter defender of all time as a direct result of his play during that time. Durant facing the best perimeter defender ever while having to defend Scottie and what he did offensively wouldn't fair to well for Durant.

Scottie could dominate a matchup with Durant by not scoring a point. The same can't be said for Durant. That's why over the course of a series or sample size I think Pippen works over Durant because he's much more versatile.

Thats pretty awesome. Durant's 16.1 Win Shares in 2010 means he had a more valuable season at age 22 than either Larry Bird or Moses Malone ever did. Which is ridiculous when you think of it...Moses Malone would routinely average 25ppg and 15rpg, and Bird won 3 consecutive MVP awards.

So, maybe Win Shares isn't such an airtight stat after all?

Durant 2010 - 3239 minutes, 30.1 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 2.8 apg, 1.4 spg, 1.0bpg.

Malone 1982 - 3398 minutes, 31.1 ppg, 14.7 rpg, 1.8 apg, 0.9 spg, 1.5bpg.
