Nowadays I agree.
Back in the day, playing SF2 on an actual arcade machine was fun. On a console, not so much.
With how big fighting games are returning to be, with games such as Super Street Fighter IV, Melty Blood, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, and Blazblue, along with games on the horizon such as Marvel Vs Capcom 3, and a special announcement from Ono on Saturday, they are as big as ever since those times.
Fighting Games are like Madden, only there isn't luck involved.
Also, Arcade games are still big, just not in the U.S, really.
I used to be huge into the MK series but I never understood this following for smash brothers. I've never liked any of the games in the series.

I feel the same way but it's only because they are so daunting and I'm not interested in memorizing thousands of different moves and combinations.
When I play a fighter, which is rarely if ever, I just mash buttons and hope to get lucky.
Memorizing all those moves and pulling them off with tremendous precision is amazing if you can do it. I can not.

That video also showed another reason why I don't like fighting games. Fucking fireballs and shit? Seriously? I think special powers in fighting game is crazy lame. The problem is that most fighting games have them.
Game: Street Fighter 3: Third Strike.
Third strike, maybe even Street Fighter 3, as a whole, had a "parrying", system. If you can correctly predict someone's attack, you hit forward on the d-pad, and you can "parry", the move, nullifying damage completely. Forward is the opposite of the command to block(backwards), and there is a damage increase, so it's a completely ballsy move.
Daigo Umehara did this with no life left in that match. Combine that with the fact that there was like 15 parries in a row, and Chun-Li's legs come out fast as fuck, in a clutch situation, makes this a hella clutch moment.
Edit: Play Tekken, Dead or Alive, Virtua Fighter, or Soul Calibur if "fireballs" are the reason why you dislike them.

In football terms, that video is the equivalent of being down 15 points in the 4th quarter with 25 seconds left, scoring a touchdown leaving 10 seconds on the clock, getting the 2 point conversion, Kicking an onside kick and recovering it with 4 seconds left on the clock, Scoring a touchdown on the very next play with a David Tyree type catch, and getting the two point conversion to WIN THE GAME.
