That's just it. His reasoning for calling the timeout, because he thought they were rushing the snap a the play clock was winding down, makes some sense. But they wouldn't have even been in that position if he would've called a timeout right after the completed pass. They would've had 25 seconds on the clock and also be able to regroup.

What I don't understand is why they were content with a 49 yard field goal. His whole thought process is at least acceptable if the kick was inside the 20.

It was a very bizarre finish. Seems to just be protocol late in games when you hit a big play down the middle you take a timeout. It makes no sense not to.
